In this special episode of The HeroPower Show (http://heropower-show.livejournal.com/), I have a chat with Dan Ewing, who plays Dillon on "Power Rangers RPM." We discuss what it was like to work on the show, favorite moments in the series, the rollercoaster of behind-the-scenes work, and Dan addresses some of the fans' tough criticisms.

(This episode contains adult language. Viewer discretion is advised. Dan had a lot of energy in this interview, so there are brief moments of noise from when he moved around the room. Otherwise, we've resolved most of our recent sound issues. Hope you enjoy the episode.)

I'd once again like to extend a thank you to Dan for joining us for our first official interview. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for watching!

I kinda went through the particulars with the interview. When I get a chance I'll check out the rest, but what I did see of it was pretty good.

What a pretentious douchebag!

No, but seriously, cool interview. He seems really laid back and cool.

I was a little surprised that Eddie and Dan are still good friends. I got the impression from the Bentaboard thread that Eddie wouldn't want to be in contact with anyone after he was let go.

I'm NOT surprised that Dan said that the budget wasn't the reason Eddie was let go. Eddie wouldn't be in control of the budget anyway (that's the line producer's job, Eddie even said that in the thread). Plus, pressure from Disney higher-ups does make some sense since Eddie said he didn't know why exactly he was let go, just that it was "Creative differences."

He also mentions that the only reason they want to cancel PR is because of issues with the parent company, which confirms what we already heard.

They weren't overbudget, they were in danger of going over the budget because Eddie had gotten so backlogged on the scripts. Eddie's flat out admitted he'd gotten behind schedule. Because he was micromanaging the production every step of the way, including supervising the ADR because PR's loop group since 2005 has been spearheaded by a woman in her seventies.

The thing is that when dealing with television and film production, Time = Money. So by getting the series behind schedule, he made them lose money.

At the end, most things boil down to financial when it comes to this business.

That continues to make me believe one reason that motivated Disney to purchase Marvel is eventual full 100% ownership of the properties they have acquired (once all the contracts expire), whereas with PR, they still have to deal with Toei, and those two letters "C" and "O" that precede "ownership" for Power Rangers represents both a curse and blessing for Disney from a business perspective. Toei does have co-ownership of PR, but Disney can exert business pressure on Toei with the half they own. Disney can do that by making Toei realize that with the Marvel acquisition, Disney no longer has to work with them for a known superhero property and just use what Marvel has, especially since Disney themselves would own whatever is created out of Marvel, and not have to listen to anyone else.

Marvel themselves have a positive relationship with Toei over the years (including the recent sub work and online release of Spider-Man), so it's just more leverage for them. It isn't that Toei has been particularly dictatorial with the franchise. They were certainly very positive and supporting of PMC, for instance. It's just Disney's cognizance that the only profitable things acquired from the Fox buyout were two franchises they don't even actually own outright and they have to share profits on.

(you see why Renaissance Atlantic producing PR themselves seemed like a brilliant idea, Toei would be incurring nearly all of the expenses and now DISNEY would be the people getting money off the PR gravy train with no cost incurred on their own)

A throwback season huh? I like the sound of that, or even any continuation we can get.

Thanks.

As far as the money issue goes. There are entities among the production whose primary job is to watch the money, and that's not a job that rests squarely on one person's shoulders. All I'm sayin.

I'd like the PR series continue in a manner similar to how Scooby-Doo has survived by all these years.
