Welcome Gerald. What's the best part of playing Flurious?
It was fun being involved with a great bunch of people who were loving what they were doing. A happy set is a fun set. I mean if the people I was working with were lots of fun I'd be happy being a rubbishman!

To be honest I'm really tired. It is about 10pm here and I've had a busy day. Thanks for your comment though. Quietly Flurious is one of my favourite characters too!!!

Hey Gerald, It must be hard having to film with all that make-up and prosthetics on, how do you cope?
Actually I found it all really invigourating. There was something very special about having a whole new face to manipulate. When the prosthetic was on I really felt in role. The costume gave my actions a certain weight which added to the characters movement.
Of course it was incredibly hot in there. Luckily I was well looked after. I had a person whose job it was to keep me hydrated and cooled off. I haven't been this well looked after before on a set.

Hello and Welcome Mr. Urguhart.
How difficult was it for you to get "into" playing a villan on the show?
Slight correction that G in my name is a Q but don't worry too much you aren't the first to mis-spell my name!!
I really enjoy playing villians. I get to endulge in a side of life that you don't normally get to endulge in. Also this particular villian was based slightly on a character I played in a theatre piece over here in NZ so I had already had some experience in manic evilness!!

I have a question Gerald, what was it like playing a villain on Power Rangers? Was it fun, exciting, difficult?
Can I cop out and say all of the above!
If I were to pick one I would definately say fun because when I had a day off I really missed running around trying to take over the world.

How comfortable was your throne?
It was fine. I didn't sit on it without my costume on and the costume was padded. Sorry to destroy any illusions but I am not that muscly in real life.

Welcome Mr. Urquhart. Two quick Qs - What was a typical day on the set like (from waking up to going to sleep) and Have you ever watched any Power Rangers...ever?
Question No1: Okay a typical day. Wake around 5. Get on set about 5.30. Spend the next hour and a half in prosthetics. About 10 to 15 getting my costume on. Act for a while. Watch my stunty do the real hard stuff. Have lunch. Act for a bit more. Remove the costume. Remove the prosthetic over about half an hour. Drive home and pretty much go straight to sleep.
If there was any spare time I'd either work on lines or try and catch 40 winks although this had to be done with a neck support due to my dreads and was often more hassle than what it was worth.
Q 2: Yes I watched the early seasons while they were still showing here. I remember also going to the theatre and seeing the film. I wouldn't say I was a total fan but I did get off on the giant monster battles. It was kinda my generations Godzilla.

I really love your character on Operation Overdrive. It is an really "cool" villian you play.
Here are my questions on you:
How was your first visit on the set, when you saw the incredible Ice cave, Flurious hideout?
Your first name "Gerald" is very common in Germany, have you ever been in Germany?

Hi, Gerald! Flurious is a really cool villain. I like the fact that there are 4 groups of villains this season... 5, if you include Thrax. It really make Operation Overdrive stand out from other seasons which usually only has one group (sometimes 2).
My question: If Disney or the producers asked you to return, would you like to play an all new villain or a mentor, or maybe something else?

Gerald, welcome to the board and to the fandom. You are indeed the "coolest" villian that we have seen in Power Rangers.
Flurious proves to be the primary villian out of all the organizations, which is definitely a plus when you have a vast amount of villians running around the world looking for the jewels. You bring a nice combination of comedy (with the character Norg) as well as intense acting through your anger towards Moltor and the primary goal of obtaining the jewels.
What was the auditioning process like for you? Was Flurious your main choice or did you audition for other roles?
I'm glad to be here! Just a quick apology. I've been over to David's discussion thread and was really impressed with his politeness. Sorry I havn't replied to everyone. It is really good to be welcomed this way!
Don't worry about it. You're just as cool. No pun intended.:;):
So, as you know, Flurious is not the only villian. If you could play the role of a different villian on the show, who would you choose?
Also, you said you had dreads! That's awesome. Do you think you could post a picture of yourself? I've always wondered what Flurious looked like under the mask.

Thanks very much. I would definately want to play another role. I wouldn't mind if I were a villian or not. I also did the voice for one of the one ep monsters called Datum so even if I was involved in just doing the voice for a character I would be happy. It is really fun doing the post sound recording. I think they should have a camera in there as it is almost as entertaining as the show is!

What was the auditioning process like for you? Was Flurious your main choice or did you audition for other roles?
The auditioning process was remarkably stress free. I was incredibly sick. I was fainting and had nausea when my agent called me up. It was only when they said that it was for power rangers that I decided to do the audition. I went and auditioned and just wanted to get it over and done with. I guess that is why I got it, because I didn't care how well I did I just wanted to go back home to bed!
After I was shortlisted there was a series of interviews; they wanted to make sure I could handle working with the prosthetics and suprise suprise I got the role.
While we all would like to play all sorts of characters I feel that Flurious was the right charcter for me. I wouldn't mind playing Norg or Spencer though but that has a lot to do with how well Kelson and David performed.

Also, you said you had dreads! That's awesome. Do you think you could post a picture of yourself? I've always wondered what Flurious looked like under the mask.
Personally I think that Miratrix would be a cool villian to play although I wouldn't look quite so good in her costume. What attracts me to her character is how unflappable she is. I like villians who calmly react when things go wrong. She doesn't seem to explode quite as much as Flurious does. Although she is calm on the outside you know she is seething underneath.
As far as the dreads are concerned I was refering to my characters dreads. If you look close enough I have a little pony tail at the back of the prosthetic appliance. Unfortunately I will never have dreads unless I wear a wig. I'm looking to upload a photo soon. I am not very experienced with computers and have to have someone hold my hand when doing even simple stuff like uploading!!!

He was lots of fun. He had a broad range of emotions. He was also focussed and patient with attempting to acheive his goals but he also had tunnel vision which effected his ability to acheive them.
On my off days I like to do all sorts of things. I play in a social football team. I like ten pin bowling. I also work as a DJ most Friday nights. I absolutely love music in all its forms, well almost all its forms.

"Hello class my name is Mr. Urquhart. Thats Urquhart rhymes with circuit."
I've had many fun moments with Kelson I got on with him a lot. Uh to pull one out in particular. When we had our prosthetics on but before we got our costumes on we used to raid the wardrobe. One time we dressed up as a doctor nurse combo. I was the doctor.
I have never used a sled. Where I grew up the snow would settle maybe two or three times a year. I would just use a wool bale instead.

I've also got a new role on a TV series hear but won't say anything until that starts airing. If you wait until Sept 14th I'll fill you in then. I've been busy promoting DJ nights as well which is a lot of fun. I am incredibly thankful that my two hobbies as a teenager have actually turned out to be my employment!

First off sorry about miss spelling your name.
I was wondering
What Characteristics do you think you and FLURIOUS share?
Thats okay I'm well used to it. Yours is one of the common ones. I've seen much worse spellings of my name! Erkit!!!
Probably the major characteristics that we share is that I enjoy to laugh. My friends have commented that my day to day laugh has got a lot more evil since playing this role. Also I enjoy being verbose and grand with my delivery of language. Finally if I were to have a weapon it would definately be a staff. I did five years of Maori cultural group training and a lot of that time was spent using a taiaha or a Maori staff.

I have never used a sled. Where I grew up the snow would settle maybe two or three times a year. I would just use a wool bale instead.
I got a serious answer, lol. I wasn't expecting that one. There was a bit between Moltor and Flurious about how Flurious stole Moltor's little red sled as a kid. Then Norg, with his infinite wisdom, responded with "I love SLEDS!" Hence my poor attempt at a joke :-)

So have you seen Hidden? The fun part about this film was all my tree scenes with Ellie Cragg. They were lots of fun to do and I was happy with the results. There was nothing I hated about the process of creating the film I just hated that it got one star in the Australian Empire magazine. By the way train spotters They used a photo of me in the review so maybe that is where you could take a gander at my beautiful visage.

Bear in mind it did only get one star in the Australasian Empire. Personally I liked it. And it gathered awards on the low budget feature film circuit. However the Empire had to do what it needed to and compare it to a raft of other films with various differences in budgets and aims. I think their verdict was fair. Just not very enjoyable.

Mwaa..ah..ahh..aaaahhh! I love laffin!
Oh that is my other job. When a teacher is sick I come in and teach the class. Relief I guess is the NZ term for it. I used to be a full time dance and drama teacher but I found myself getting employed too much. I still do it now because I love the kids I worked with. Also it provides a certain structure to my life that acting or djing doesn't provide. I guess it keeps me grounded.

Yeah it is all sorts of things. I sometimes get called in for a day or sometimes it is a whole terms worth of work. This can be for any reason including sickness, extended leave or sports or cultural tours. My favourite classes to take are when the drama teacher is away. It means I get to work with the kids I've worked with already.

Because NZ has such dramatic coutryside that changes so much there are many different weather patterns in a small areas. I could go into it in detail, I have a passing interest in meteorology.
The joke about Auckland is that on any given day it can rain. I reply to this by saying yes but on any given day it will be sunny too. The best season in Auckland for me is autumn. This is when the weather is most settled. It is better than the summer because the heat isn't as abrasive but the ocean is still warm enough to go swimming.

I understand now. Usually here in the US they're called substitutes. But that's a long word and I think I like Relief better.
How did you feel about Moltor being your character's brother? Did you like him? Did you think he was a big meanie?
Yeah I thought he was a meanie but I thought that I was a bigger meanie And I liked it like that. Their have been lots of instances throughout literature when brothers have been competitive with each other. I love that dynamic existing between us.

Ah, dance teacher! What kind, or is it just an all-purpose dance class? Also, what type of music do you DJ?

Yeah I teach more the theory of dance than an actual dancing style. The basis of my experience in dance is kapahaka which is traditional Maori dance and contemporary dance. I have to say that I'm not particularly good at either but I do enjoy veiwing both forms.
Now how long can I make this blog. I love a wide range of music lets see I like hip hop, indie rock, emo, country, blues, house, drum n bass, electro, trance, crunk, dub, reggae, dancehall, folk, baltimore club, grime, 80s in all its forms er 2 step, and many others. When I play I like to try and mix as many genres as possible. I like to give an education but keep it party first and foremost.
For an example of how broad my tastes are I recently went to see the Cure and before that saw Yacht and Panther perform. I'm also really keen to see The Game and Naughty By Natuer when they tour in September.
On that I do play hip hop nights sometimes, 80s nights on a Friday and every third thursday play an indie rock slash electro night.

I have done some stunt training before and I really enjoyed the stunt training we did with the stunt unit. Unfortunately my costume and prosthetic appliance were soo expensive I didn't do a lot of my own fighting. As the season wore on I did a bit more but nothing much more than a fall or two and the odd staff thrust.
Looking back on it that was one of my dissapointments but that is what the stunt department are there for and they did an excellent job. Also it would have been terrible to have gotten injured halfway through the season.

What is your inspiration for the portrayal of Flurious? Have you been inspired by other TV/Movie villains or was it all just made up from you?
In a fight to the death, who would win - Flurious or Moltar?

There were a few inspirations. I had played a character like him in the theatre called Dr Zak. Also I had seen the Harry Potter film Goblet of Fire I think and really enjoyed the way Voldemort was played. The world of prosthetics is really interesting and I'd to play a charater even less humanoid as Flurious was

You just "suck it up princess" and get through it. Mortal fears of mine are hieghts, not handy for someone as tall as me and spiders. In Hidden I spent a lot of time up a tree and another project I'm working on I spent inside a shed full of spiders. You just realise that you are getting paid to play dressups really and that these fears have to be gotten past for the good of the piece.
I guess sometimes when you are so into your character you start losing your fears and start living with the characters fears.

The most fear he shows is in the first 2 episodes where it is too hot for him. I think he has a fear of inadequecy as well. Maybe he fears a true connection with someone meaningful. I mean Norg is trying his best to be more than just a servant!!! lol

Hey, since Flurious is the villian of ice, do you have an answer for why he is on the beach in quite a few scene's?:p
Cyborg
08-20-2007, 10:37 PM
I don't think he's MADE of ice, but he was cursed to be a humanish monster who needs to cool-off (litterally) in sub-zero temperatures although he can survive in most normal climates (bar deserts like the Gobi) for a period of time.

Hey, since Flurious is the villian of ice, do you have an answer for why he is on the beach in quite a few scene's?:p
It is more a case of him chasing his prey rather than them coming to him. He definately is more of a homebody than Moltor preferring to send out minions and Norg rather than leaving the icy comfort of his cave. He sees no choice but to leave it on occasion.

Flurious makes reference to the havoc heat plays on him early on in the series. He is like a reverse reptile. They need to warm up before they are effective.

There are a huge number but I'd have to say the two main ones are Leanardo Di'caprio and Johnny Depp. Both make bold and interesting choices with their characters and also pull it off. Alan Rickman also plays a good villian as does Gary Oldman. Bill Murray has always been a favourite since Ghostbusters. As far as women are concerned Nicole Kidman is phenomanal if you ignore bewitched and Renne Zelwinger is great. Cold Mountain was a terrible film but when I saw her in it I knew she would win the oscar. That barn scene is excellent.

Yeah owned them both but I didn't like the lack of feeling in the surroundings. NWN2 looked a lot better but the gameplay was a bit clunky especially during conversations. I preferred the two dimensional nature of Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale. I felt like you were playing in the midst of a mythical painting. The background art had a real strong sense of itself.

Transformers was amazing. Now my dream is that they'll come along and make a Power Rangers movie like that. Making some badass megazord fights.
That would be fun. The thing with films is that it really depends on the right scripts being in the right hands at the right time.

Gerald, as Smokin asked earlier, have you ever played Diablo II? And if so, have you played either Diablo (original) or Lord of Destruction (eXpansoin Pack to D2)?
And since Transformers has been mentioned, have you watched any of the series or either movie (1986 animated or 2007 CGI/Live-Action)?
No Diablo wasn't my thing. Baldurs gate and Icewind were enough for me at that stage. I was also playing Fifa 98 til my thumbs bled on the ps1. I would take nz to the football world cup and win. Something that I think has more cheance of happening than a PR movie unfortunately

I had the movie on video and loved the series. My favourite was Seaspray. The first Transformer I had was Perceptor

Sorry once again I was being very unclear. They will be releasing 5 volumes (5 DVD's) in total for the OO series, currently they plan on releasing Volumes 1, and 2 this September.
The 5 volumes will cover the entire series. I believe that each DVD is being named after each jewel. The first 2 are coming out in September, and ususally, more come out in December, so I'm guessing the other 3 will come out around then. They'll cost $100 in total ($20 each, without shipping) so, I guess they'll make a good Christmas gift if you celebrate.
So, Mr. Urquhart, do you have any holidays you enjoy celebrating?

Yeah I think I did VII through X I might be out by a game or two but I played four in a row. Another example of how a game doesn't need to strive for a realistic three dimensional setting in order to be fun.
Oh wow, you have played Final Fantasy series. That's awesome. Well, ever since they ported the FF series to Playstation, they strive for the three dimensional settings. Back in the day of Super Nintendo, they had a series of awesome fantasy role playing games that I'm sure you would simply love.

Many of the fans online find Norg's character rather annoying. (I like his character and maybe I'm weird, but I do, lol). Do you like Norg's character?
Also, do you believe that your cave (lair/base) was well designed or do you think it could have been cooler (no pun intended)?

ive got a uniqe question for you as well.
Where do you see yourself with your acting in say the next year to the next 5 years, are you gonna continue to act, and what roles do you see yourself in?
I fully intend to act for the rest of my life. I have a natural gravity so I feel that my career prospects will probably improve with age maybe peaking in my mid thirties. However that can be in any number of projects. I enjoy theatre and have done musical theatre before. I've started a new project at the moment but more on that when it is about to debut. I would love to do more voice acting as well as film and TV. I've also been involved behind the scenes directing plays and doing sound for theatre. So long as I get to be part of the performing arts I don't mind.
Also as I've mentioned earlier I also work as a DJ and a promoter so would be keen to develop that area as well. Hopefully an NZ tour then maybe two years down the track over to London or the US east coast. Potentially their may be a tour to Australia as well but don't know many people over their at the mo.

I loved Norg's character and was really suprised by the fan reaction to him. I feel that he provides Flurious with some colour. Even if you don't like the charcter himself he gave Flurious a chance to express a wide range of emotions from anger to exassibation through to love and affection (that is only in one ep). I feel he is neccasary as without him all the villians would have a samey quality about them. I'd just be another Moltor.
Also I think it is important for television series to remember what they are. Norg totally fits in with the feel of the original baddies henchmen. If you are after something with less self effacing humour in it then there is star wars or chronicals of riddick, star trek or firefly stargate the x men movies. Actually I can think of many films and tv series geared toward a slightly older market but PR will always be geared to a younger one.
Please take my little rant out of context either because I do think that it is important to know what you do and don't like and I see strong reasoning for it. However I genuinely cracked when I heard Kelson deliver the character and that is definately within the realm of my sense of humour.
Also what I say shouldn't be taken as gospel because My sense of humour is mine own. I liked Jar Jar Binks who a large amount of people hated!!!

Well I do have a kiwi accent normally but I have trained quite a lot so a lot of kiwis ask if I'm from overseas when I'm born and bred here in NZ. The accent which I started off with for the character was very American and very twangy to my ear. However his accent evolved through a series of workshops before filming started.
I love accents so no it wasn't hard to hard mine own. If anything due to the changes made during the workshop process his accent became closer to mine.

As a gamer, have you ever played any RPG's like Phantasy Star (http://www.phantasy-star.net), Grandia or Shining Force (http://www.shiningforcecentral.com)?
In fact, I actually worked on the European version of Final Fantasy VII myself as a software tester... Ah, the stories I could tell of working into the early hours of the morning and the caffeine rush from drinking lots of Pepsi...
I recommend that you get the Megadrive Collection UMD for PSP as it has Phantasy Star II, III and IV on it plus Sword of Vermillion [although I personally recommend playing Phantasy Star II+IV myself, in fact my name on this board is a homage to the Japanese version of Rune Walsh from Phantasy Star IV!] along with Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Tales of Eternia and the Final Fantasy remakes when they come out in English.
Japanese-games wise, I'd definitely recommend you try Elite Beat Agents, Jump Superstars and Full Metal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy if you ever get a Nintendo DS.

I think Gerald was talking about MMPR:TM by the movie (there was ONLY MMPR:TM & T:APRM, and Gerald only saw MMPR S1, S2 & TM before PR was stopped being aired in NZ). MMPR S1 was where Tommy (ponytail Tommy, not S2's mullet Tommy) was the Green Ranger (DragonRanger in ZyuRanger in Japan).
So Gerald liked Tommy (MMPR Green) & Alpha (little robot) but disliked Zordon (who's head was actually Blue, but was close enough to the Blue|Green edge that it fades between the two.).

Big fan of cricket. I'd have to say its my no 1 sport. I love rugby league. I think Aussie's NRL is the best sports competition in the world because it has the most balance. I think at the moment the lowest place team has 8 wins out of 22 where in most leagues it is one or two. Also it is a game which is based on attacking and yet the defense is thrilling to. I watch the olympics. Love rugby. I'm a Crusaders fan. Support Arsenal as well. There have been some hard times recently. Thierry come back! I played all sorts of sport when I was growing up.

I might have that megadrive collection Sonic is awesome and I really lioked mega man

LOL Looks like you have peaked the interest of the gamer crowd a bit here. lol
What would you say is your shining moment as an actor?
Ever think of growing a Flurious style mustache? :P
Actually I had to shave off a mo in order to have one glued on. I always grow one in November or should I say Mo-vember! But because I was doing the show I decided to grow one early. I love mostaches. Have you gone shopping before? Well you try going shopping with a stache! How about walking the dog? Then definately try it with a stache!! Kissing your girlfriend? Stache!!!!
Ok enough of that. Shining moment. I'd have to say that one of the best times I had was in a theatre piece that I did with Barnie Duncan down in Wellington. It was this mime clown piece that sold out before we had even got down there. It was so fun and irreverant. The wellington people were buying us dinner and drinks. we felt like theatre rock stars.

Thanks Howler that is correct. Very perceptive.

Wow, never tought you were some kind of a gamer. If you like RPGs that much you should really try Shinig Force, as Thray_Walsh said (I still can't get over the fact that Scenario 2 and Scenario 3 of Shining Force 3 were never released outside of japan )
You're doing a great job on OO. Flurious is such a cool villain (pun not intended).

He's our hero and he's gonna take polution down to zero!! Loved him. I really liked the guy with the earth powers. Can't remember his name. Really liked the pig villian and Gaia is one hot earth spirit!
I believe the guy you're looking for is Kwame. I caught a re-run of this show a while back.

Done it many times. I grew up listening to grunge and heavy metal. At its longest my goatee was about three inches. The folly of youth.

If I recall correctly, mullet!Tommy came in Season 1, ponytail!Tommy was later on. You confused me a bit there, Howler!
So Gerald, do you ever watch yourself perform? If so, do you find it weird? Are you your own worst critic or do you take it in stride?
Yeah I am my worst critic. I have two or three friends who I know are going to be honest and fair. I always try to take them with me to guage my performances. It is not that I think I'm terrible I just see lots of little things that I could have done better. I see the mechanics of what I'm doing rather than the performance so critique far too harshly.

Thank you for your candid response.
Any actor worth his salt will always tend to be self-critical...aware that he could've done better. It's how one handles it that counts. One must learn a lesson and move on. That's how one develops as an actor.
David posted this in his thread in response to a question similar to mine so that's why I asked you on your attitudes towards your performances.
Have you ever been big on comic books? And if so, which was your favorite superhero or team?

I never collected comics but I have read quite a lot of the x men universe due to my flatmates collection. My favourite character was Gambit and was bitterly disappointed he didn't make it into the movie series.
My favourite graphic novel I have read is the Sandman series. Neil gaiman has some beautiful stories.
I also enjoyed the sin city series and was really happy at how true to the story the film was.
I'm just curious, how do you like the new Gerald Urquhart layout for the site, dedicated to you?

Yup. I agree. Would you rather play a fire themed villian? Not saying it has to be Moltor, but were you happier playing an ice themed villian?

Ice is a powerful elemental force and I was stoked to be an ice demon type character. I would have no preferrance of element but I do wish that I was able to use my own ice powers more in the show. I would have loved to fly like iceman from xmen.

Imagine Flurious....with the powers of Iceman and Gambit combined...very nice.

I agree. What if you had gotten the chance to be a water, earth, or air themed villian?
And do you think it would have been cool if Norg & Flurious got to run an ice cream truck?

Mr Urquhart, a few more games you should check out on the PSP are Generations of Chaos, Gurumin [especially as the main character's totally cute and uses a drill as a weapon!:)], Valhalla Knights, Samurai Warriors, Shinobido and Harvest Moon.
I have another question for you which I've already asked Mr Weatherley and Miss Montemayor. If you ever got invited to a event in the UK like the London MCM Expo (http://www.londonexpo.com) as a star of Power Rangers, would you go?

I've always personally liked Cyclops, Gambit, and Iceman. Yea, Nightcrawler is awesome. Have you seen the three X-Men movies? Iceman was a major character is all three movies (mostly in two movies) and Nightcrawler was shown in part 2.

I think that'd be awesome. It'll top any of the Fearcats zords.

I would love to attend expos and conventions anywhere around the world. It would be a nice opportunity to meet fans and to get a personal guage of what it means to be part of power rangers. Here in New Zealand we are quite insulated from that sort of thing.
Of course we have to be practical about this though. It costs a bit to get over to London England but also it depends on availability as well. At present I am working on a project and if I had to choose between an acting job and a convention visit I would take the job. I'm an actor first and foremost. That is not to say I wouldn't be dissapointed because I think it would be fun.

Saw all three in the movie theatre. I thought the third one was visually impressive but lacked a certain something. It was intense how they killed off characters left right and centre. My favourite scene in all three was when Magneto drew the metal from his jailers blood to escape.
Did you read the comics. I loved the Age of Apocalypse alternate universe.

Hey Gerald, if their were one planet you would like to visit in the future, which would it be? I know, I ask weird questions,
It would have to be Mars! Mercury is just a tiny burnt rock, Venus's atmosphere will make it hard to see anything at all, the gravity of the other planets would make a visit very uncomfortable and Pluto has just lost planetery status.
No Mars has it all. It has valleys and mountains and it is a lovely shade of red.
