There's what the three stand-ins for Austin, Thuy, and Walt looked like. As you can see, this was on the set of "The Ninja Encounter, Part I", which recycled footage (and clothes) from "The Song of Guitardo".

Ninja Encounter.
Tommy, Billy and Kim are sitting at a table together, watching the Angel Grove Vs Stone Canyon ninja match preparations, where we are then led to believe that "Jason, Zack and Trini" (these doubles, obviously, same outfits from Song Of Guitardo etc) WALK PAST the friends they've known for more than a year as an enclosed group, away from the camera, and sit somewhere else without us being forced to see their faces. "Good friends?"
This is where I like to draw on a theory that the group got divided because Jason was pissed off and/or depressed at Tommy being leader that he started to diverge away from Tommy. Zack and Trini remained loyal to Jason, where as Kim and Billy remained loyal to Tommy. Because Tommy was the leader, and Jason was the "rebel" now, so to speak, the show focused on Tommy. It's just my way of justifying things with in-show reasons, ignoring external actor reasons.
Trini and Zack's doubles, to be fair, at least VAGUELY look like Trini and Zack from behind in that juice bar scene, and command centre scenes, when we look at them from behind. But Jason's, hell no.
bobtherandomguy
02-27-2010, 10:46 AM

OH right, I get you now.
I've never really found that theory very believable because when we did see the team all together(through recycled footage) they acted like they always had.
Probably because they had an obligation to work as part of a team for the sake of duty and people's lives. So for the benefit of the civilians, they put their personal feelings on hold when it's time to do collective duty.
But unmorphed, they haven't got that obligation.
I imagine Zack and Trini were still ok with the group, but Jason wasn't, so Zack and Trini felt torn because they were loyal to Jason too.
It's just me brainstorming really.
louie kaboom

bobtherandomguy
03-01-2010, 10:59 AM
Jason was the first person Tommy thought of when Billy couldn't use the Gold Ranger powers. If there had been a split over Tommy being the leader(which he still was in Zeo) I doubt Jason would have been so willing. Really the only extremely odd instance I can think of was when they didn't all sit together at the Ninja Tournament and the logical explanation I have for that. Well there wasn't really any seats open by Tommy, Billy and Kim

^ That was the least of my complaints.
By the time the Power Transfer came about, Zordon made it sound like JT&Z was IMPORTANT to the mission of finding the Sword (can't remember its full name). Sure, Jason added a lot to the mission by keeping Zedd & Serpentera at bay, but Trini & Zack? They did NOTHING! They added absolutely NOTHING to the mission.
Trini & Zack didn't earn their retirement.

When Tommy was leader, he didn't have a problem with Jason.
My theory is Jason having a problem with Tommy being leader, and righly so. Not the other way round.
But during his leave after giving his powers to Rocky, Jason has time to reflect over the matters, and learns to be himself, more relaxed, away from duty. When he comes back, him and Tommy haven't got a problem anymore.

Believe me, I'm pretty pissed about how Trini and Zack weren't given a fair goodbye either.
But I view that scene like this, Jason had become quiet and depressed since Zordon the senile ******* reduced Jason to half a man, it was as if Jason had lost his spark.
But on his final mission as a red ranger, Jason places his hand on his old friend's shoulder, the new leader, and for the first time in a long time since his demotion, speaks out.
"Let me take him."
Overanalyzing this to the extreme, but it felt like good development for Jason. He was fighting back, and regaining strength and confidence, the fire was lit again, for one last mission.
For that, emphasis had to be taken off Zack and Trini, sadly.

Oh THAT.
Well that's hardly Zack's fault, mainly because they were obviously trying to keep Zack's voice over down (as we know) and he didn't have any leadership importance to take care of like Jason, but also non leaders may not get that much focus in the cockpit and, well, the other 3 had gone to help Tommy, so it makes sense that they wouldn't change camera shots just to focus on Zack.

Your one theory makes sence at least for Zach. Zach and Jason were best freinds prior to the series. It mkaes sence that Zach would stick with his best bud til the end. However for trini, it kind of surprised me as she was more best freinds with Billy and Kimberly. So her hangin out wiht Zach and Jason more seems kind of out of place. But hey its been a while since I really watched season 1 and 2.
Jiemusu
05-03-2010, 10:52 AM
Haha interestingly enough, I looked at it differently. I found it bizarre that Billy didn't go along with Trini, and loosely Zack, and didn't really see why him and Tommy became "apparently so close", or what it was that made him and Kim spend more time together before it all happened.
Judging from his expression in Zeo when Jason returns, I presume he must have some kind of mild resentment towards Jason. Or it could be something along the lines of Jason getting the gold ranger powers instead of Billy, and I'm looking too much into it.

I never understood why Billy didn't create his own Ranger powers. He knew that Zordon & Alpha had experience with creating brand new powers, and by Zeo, he was Zordon's #3. Surely by having such a position the three of them could have worked in secrecy.
It also bothered me how childish he got around the time the Gold Ranger showed up, he CHOSE to drop out of being a Power Ranger at the beginning of the Season, it was nobody's fault besides his own.

Production-wise, this isn't a good enough reason. Even though there was a shot of focus of which Billy is taking that shock, it was mainly to add concern of whether he'd live or not.

I can easily see why Billy would have had second thoughts and wanted to become a ranger again. I don't think he is very childish at all, even Billy can be a little short sighted. It would pretty much suck to be stuck in the Power Chamber for long periods. The Chamber is dark and probably pretty cold (Computers and Alpha produce a lot of heat, to protect them just like in a modern server room you'd probably want to keep the Chamber cold, probably in the 60Fs.). Working on those computers and programming new equipment would get so boringly repetitive, even for Billy. Where are the challenges anymore? I have no idea what it would be like to spend long periods around Zordon but I image he would start to feel like an annoying manager. Alpha certainly would drive him nuts though. Alpha adores his human friends and loves their attention so I can see him being a pest. I can see a little bit of rivalry developing at times if Billy wanted to be number 2. It often did seem like Alpha and Billy were not as good of friends during Zeo. Maybe just the 'To much togetherness' effect.

Thanks for the info - I'd always thought the actor who played Cousin Curtis did Zack's voice. IIRC, the other voices were pretty hard for me to take. I felt Austin St.John's voice had greatly improved since the early shows, and I recall that the replacement voice was pretty weak. Even knowing some of the circumstances behind the casting changes, the transition still wasn't handled very well, IMO. To address earlier posts regarding Billy - onscreen, the actor sure seemed pretty unhappy by the end...

Kat felt envious of Kimberly being with Tommy, Rita's spell turned it into pure jealously and anger.
Jason and Tommy's friendly rivalry was turned into a fierce and aggressive competition, where they were prepared to fight each other irrationally.
Kimberly felt uspet that Trini's hobby stall was more successful than hers, so the spell made her extremely nasty and bitter.
Kimberly and Tommy were competing in the school elections, which turned into a fierce btchy competition thanks to Rita's spell.
When the Hate Master made the rangers hate each other, Adam squared up to Tommy saying that "you and I both know I should be the leader".
I could go on...
But basically, Jason's feelings of resentment of the past were still there, and the evil spell accelerated those feelings.
For some reason the majority hated fake Trini's voice the most. I always felt fake Zack was the worst. "POWR EH-XE! C'MON PURS-HYED!"
Strange, I always found Zack's to be the most believable. Ok it wasn't fantastic, it was way off, but it seemed to be the closest or nearest to the original actor's voice than Trini and Jason's doubles were.
Trini's sounded forced and, yes, very fake... but I found Jason's the worst. Trini's voice double wasn't painful. You knew it wasn't her, but it wasn't painful. Jason's... was just a permanent facepalm. Easily my worst.
It was ridiculous that fake-Trini's voice had a strong Asian dialect when real-Trini spoke English perfectly :P
Bizarre, I always found it the other way round. No disrespect to Thuy Trang of course, but her voice double's accent seemed more Americanized to me.
I think they should've replaced Jason, Zack, and Trini as soon as they said they would leave the show.
That would have been a bad move IMO.
It was wierd enough them not hanging around enough anymore when we were led to believe they WERE there.
But to present a storyline that they "vanished over night" for no reason, seems strange.
At least this way, people could have a few episodes to get used to them having a reduced role, before their presence is gone.
Tommy: "Hey look its our freinds, Rocky, Adam, and Aiesha!"
Billy: "What happened to jason, Zach, and Trini?"
Tommy: "Who?"
Lmao.
Ah well... at least we got those 'letters from Jason, Zack and Trini' during the latter half of season 2. At least it acknowledges the rangers didn't totally forget who they were.
