Season Summary
Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan is the fifth Super Sentai Series. It was the first team to begin with and contain only three senshi. Sun Vulcan is also the only Super Sentai series to serve as a direct sequel to its previous series, Denshi Sentai Denjiman. The reason being that Denjiman was an exteremely popular series at the time and Toei was stumped trying to figure out ways to build on it. At first Toei just thought of extending Denjiman into a second year ala Goranger, but that didn't work out for whatever reasons. Toei then tried to go for making a sequel and calling the show Plasman (which was basically just going to be Denjiman with new suits), but that name was trademarked, so it finally settled on Sun Vulcan. The Denjiman were originally supposed to appear for a five episode arc, but it was too hard to get everyone back.
Taiyo can be translated as sun, though solar can also be used. The title, like many other seasons, involves a pun; in this case, it is the use of the word sun, which is pronounced the same as the Japanese word for three, “San.” The powers of this Super Sentai have already been used by Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. Gokai Yellow has used the power solo and with Red and Blue. Miss Arashiyama, though not officially a senshi, becomes White Rose Mask likely through the quick-change talent that is possessed Super Sentai heroines. This talent was explained in the Gaoranger VS. Super Sentai Movie by Mega Pink to Gao White. [B]Sun Vulcan is the last Super Sentai series to be written by Shouzo Uehara, who was Sentai's Head Writer since Goranger (Except Battle Fever J who's head writer was Susumu Takaku) who then went on to write for the Metal heroes Franchise.
The threat of the Machine Empire Black Magma causes the Earth Peace Defense Squad (EPDS) to decide to create the team, Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan. Commander Arashiyama assembles three specialists from EPDS's air force (Vul Eagle), navy (Vul Shark), and rangers (Vul Panther), to become the Sun Vulcan. Harsh training begins. Learning of this, the Machine Empire Black Magma, an organization worshipping the Black Solar God based at the Iron Claw Castle at the North Pole who want to have Mechahumans ruling the world attack the EPDS base, but the Sun Vulcan luckily arrive in time to save it.
Hell Satan, the current leader of Black Magma (and later revealed to only be a servant of the true leader), prays to the Black Solar God and is rewarded with a revived Queen Hedrian (enemy of the Denjiman), now a cyborg with a mechanical heart and a metallic afro. But even with Queen Hedrian's aid, Black Magma fails over and over. Following the death of Zero Girl 01, a Vader named Amazon Killer, arrives from space, destroying the Sun Vulcan Base. Amazon Killer is only loyal to Queen Hedrian. A new Vulcan Base is built after the first is destroyed.
The original Vul-Eagle, Ryuusuke Oowashi leaves during episode 23 to pursue space shuttle research for NASA in the United States. He is replaced by his friend and master of the sword, Takayuki Hiba (who first appeared on episode 21). The team successfully defends the psychic descendant of the Denji (the group from which the Denjiman are descended from), the nun Himiko, from Black Magma. Shortly after this, Lightning Galaxer shows up. Sun Vulcan devises the New Vulcan Ball, but their attacks are no use against Lightning Galaxer until he becomes the gigantic Lightning Monger. Finally, the trio and their commander go to the North Pole to rescue Arashiyama Misa, and succeed not only in doing so (despite a fake Misa to confuse them), but also in defeating the Omnipotent God, the true leader of Black Magma, by feigning surrender and striking when it lowers its guard.
