Forgive me if I offend anyone but...

I was just wondering what everyone's thought on the idea or concept of a gay/lesbian character becoming a power ranger... Note: Character, not actors (you know... Billy's actor was..)

Opinion?

It wouldn't make a difference to me either way. My favorite setup for the show is for it to have 1, or 2 main relationships, but leave the other characters single. This allows people to put the other characters in any relationship they want. Besides that most people will just ship whoever they want. The most popular pairings tend be gay ones. Jason/Tommy, Sky/Bridge, Jayden/Antonio. PR also is more worried about pushing merch than being progressive. It's generally easier to get parents to buy the toys if they don't have qualms with the message.

I wouldn't mind, so long as it'll actually add or do something for the character outside of "Shock Value". Adding a LGBT character just for the sake of adding a LGBT character is something I hate, as its obviously for ratings or controversy. That said, I doubt'll happen.

Won't happen on a kids show.

It would cause a lot of controversy, which I think Saban would rather avoid.

Wasn't Kelsey from Lightspeed rescue?

It'd be awesome and I would totally support it but seeing as how they barely let the straight couples kiss in these series (Seriously, I think I can count on one hand the times that's happened), they probably won't have the mention of a gay person. Though if they had some good writers, they can do some heavy subtext and hints with a character.
Also for transgender characters, even less likely since most people can't wrap their heads around the whole idea of being born in the wrong body.

Having a transgender character is very unlikely since it's still a taboo in many places.

first, i'm not a homphobic... i'm a bisexual who likes pr characters (both genders)

Kelsey is a FEMALE. i assume you never saw her in a movie called Dark Wolf

anyways, the actress who does her is now married to a man- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0931652/bio and they have a kid- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0185848/bio

yes, transgender is a taboo... but, let's not talk about that.

The show already has taboo on straight relationships...

I guess so Ryan. Am I right in saying the only two characters to kiss on screen are Kim and Tommy?

Ryan Steele

Υes. I think the same happens on Sentai although. In none season I've seen, there is a kiss. Again there it's like 10 year old kids are going out on a date. It pisses me off, because obviously some characters love each other in both shows. Make a comparison then with Il mondo di Patty (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fit.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FIl_mond o_di_Patty&ei=-PhgTrK5M8fKswblteGMDg&usg=AFQjCNHXxLBm5HlTwgZT1-L6fUVfL4EKJw&sig2=xxfANTn0DAV-AoMCuGz2WA) and laugh...

I think the closest thing we had to another kiss was dominic kissing fran on the cheek

As nice as it would be to have something like this and show kids that there's nothing wrong with LGBT people, I honestly don't think it's ever going to happen unless we see a dramatic shift in society's general attitudes towards LGBT people and their rights. But we're nowhere near that point yet, so trying to put that in now would almost guarantee either cancellation or a whole lot of parents--and probably pundits and politicians of certain stripes too--raising a stink about it, or both. (Heck...remember the furor that took place a few years ago with the final Harry Potter book and J.K. Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay?) Until then? Well, there's always the plethora of slash/femmeslash fanfics out there for you to peruse.

But yes...let's also get over the show's apparent fear of even straight relationships first. I'm not even what one would really call a "shipper," and I can't stand the fanfics out there that insist on neatly pairing up every Ranger on a team, but really, the lack of any kind of romantic tension or relationships among a team anymore is bordering on unrealistic.

PR, as a series, is pretty much locked in at pre-sexual levels. We scarcely have heterosexuality in it anymore. The trouble with incorporating people of a specific orientation/ethnicity/whatever into this series is that the writing has never been the most sophisticated. It reduces people to just "being" whatever their stripe happens to be. You do not want that done for a gay or bi lead. To say nothing of the fact if you lead with a bisexual, gay and lesbian groups will protest because bis are "more acceptable." Open with gay and people will claim shock value. Open lesbian and they'll claim sensationalism. And that won't be from "moral guardians," that will be INTERNAL to the GLBT community. I don't believe PR can tackle the weightier issues associated with sexuality of any flavor, straight or otherwise. Can you name a single PR relationship that isn't just "and now we get together?" It's bad when KIM AND TOMMY, which is no more sophisticated or weightier than any generic high school crush, is considered the highlight of the series.

I think he was saying Kelsey was a lesbian, which is a rumor that has been going on for quite awhile. and the only way transgender could even be thought of is if they throw away the underlying meaning and had males dress up as a female just for fun, no real issues with them.

I don't think the Kim/Tommy relationship was the best in the series, just the most well known. The only real highlight was that they were shown kissing on screen, something that was never shown again. In my opinion the best relationship was between Joel/Dr. Fairweather. The worst was probably Nick/Madison.

Yeah, Joel actually married Angela Fairweather off screen before the Time Force team-up. That makes that one the strongest official relationship in the franchise (aren't Udonna and Leanbow the only other married couple to be regular characters?).

Yes you are right Digi. wait Didn't Ziggy and Dr.K hook up?

Blazen

Not officially. They just open a Kindergarten together and Ziggy is shown putting his arm around her. While it is pretty obvious that they start a relationship it's not stated.

Now that I can definitely agree with. I remember being stupid happy when I found out they got married. All Joel's flirting wasn't for nothing :).

The first thing that came to mine with Jayden/Antonio: "Oh Jayden.. when I'm with you, you make me feel so... so golden" lol

If rangers started coming out of the closet, the first ones I'd be expecting to walk out of the closet would be Danny and Max. God I love those two for some reason.

If they can have a gay muppet on Sesame Street, then why can't they have a gay power ranger?

Because Sesame Street can do it without being exploitative. Power Rangers doesn't have that level of care or subtlety

As a lesbian Sentai/PR fan, I agree with you 100%, Commander. Since straight relationships rarely happen in the show, a queer relationship is even less likely to happen.
Although it would be nice if they did have at least one gay character in the show, but parents would go insane and PR would suffer for it, unfortunately.

Cmdr Crayfish

Kelsey was intended to be gay. I've had that affirmed for me, at least. But, you know, that's still not a significant homosexual relationship. That's "we did an episode meant for a heterosexual man and a woman and did it with two women instead, DID YOU GET WHAT WE DID THERE, WINK WINK."

AmandaBear
10-15-2011, 05:48 PM
^ LOL And what's funny about that is that her Sentai counterpart was a dude. XD So she looked even more tomboy with her suit being different from Dana's.

Oh, and wasn't there some homoeroticism hinted at between Mack and Tyzonn?

Cmdr Crayfish

Yes, the entire point of what I said is "they adapted the GoGoV episode literally, because in this instance it infers she's a lesbian."

I haven't watched the episode myself in years, but it's something about her interaction with the female astronaut in "Riding the Edge." It's been a joke in the fandom for years.

A nice idea, but it probably won't be happening anytime soon. And I doubt we will be seeing any transsexual Rangers ever, it's a topic that I don't believe will ever be exposed to kids in western society.
