Live post time:

-Ahh, Bulk and Spike. So you did make it to this episode.
-So I'm now even more convinced, that Ji's first name is Mentor.
-powerrangersmail.net? Interesting...
-Did they really have to show a clip reminding us of Emily's two-time-only clumsiness?
-Another non-plot related Bulk clip. At least he's not getting slimed.
-And Najee's acting still needs work. Though I think he did show some improvements this episode.
-And yay... clip of American-kids-with-kiwi-accents-that-they-lose-in-adulthood.
-The way the next commercial break ended... It seemed like it was the end of the episode? But there's still like 5 minutes left. Pacing is really off.
-I guess though, a Christmas Special is not complete, without Christmas Day.
-Wow, best line for Kevin this whole season.
-And poor Mike, feeling all left out.
-And very nice ending, with Mike giving his gift to his favorite duo.

Not bad for a clipshow. At least there was some sort of plot.

And Mike at the end was funny

I'll admit, I liked this one. Thought it handled the clips portion better than Party Monsters did. While it was the good kind of cheesy and all, I did think Hector kinda phoned it in during the "Wake up everyone! It's Christmas!" scene. And where was Antonio?

I did like this episode a lot. It was rather cute. Was good to see Kevin thinking about something more than training and himself for a change.

Another clip show. Samurai is really going for a record here. By the end of next year, we could have a season with 4 clip shows. Wow.

--I still can't get over how stupid it is that they named the mentor Mentor. It's an old complaint, but good grief...
--"Mia is my best friend in the world." Yeah, Saban. Kids don't want to hear about sappy crap like that.
--Excuse me for a minute, I don't know a lot about girls' fashion, but the outfits Emily & Mia were wearing were both too cute. Take note girls, take note.
--Is Serena really gonna' read that long *** letter? Because holy crap, Emily spent the ENTIRE DAY typing that email. If I'm Serena, my reaction is "...GTFO".

Not a lot to say about this episode. All the Christmas cheery stuff was nice, but I do have to say that this episode once again exposed one of Samurai's biggest flaws. They continue to tell us that Kevin looks up to Jayden and they're great fighting partners, but very rarely do they show us. They tell us Emily & Mia are the best of friends in the world, but do we ever see this "best friend in the world" chemistry the two of them supposedly have? Samurai's characters continue to be so bland that we need to be told what they're like. It was a problem at the beginning of the season and it's still a problem now.

Uh, his name is Ji...

Anyways, I enjoyed it overall. It was nice getting a recap of all the scenes, I forgot about some of them as they got lost in all the in-suit action of the show. Also good to see Bulk and Spike again. I'm looking forward to Super Samurai. From knowing what's coming with Shinkenger, but also knowing we're going to see some original things (for one, Skull will make some sort of appearance)... I think it should be pretty enjoyable.

Ugh, that was awful. I was prepared to give this episode a lot of leeway, since it's both a Christmas special and a clip show. All they had to do was show a few decent clips, and the Rangers bonding during the holiday. This should've been an extremely easy episode to pull off. But they couldn't even do that.

The episode starts out with Bulk and Spike, shivering as they walked down the street. Even though no one else was. Seriously, the two of them looked like bums, even ignoring the plot point about how they had no money for presents. Now with Nick's dragged out airing schedule, I hadn't seen these guys since October. This reminded me how much I hate Spike, and the fact that Bulk is being dragged down by him.

Emily's typing up a "Christmas letter" to her sister Serena, which provides most of the narration in this episode. The idea of anyone having to write a "letter" in the age of cell phones, texting, e-mail, or Face Book is just funny. The stuff that she tells Serena are the kind of basic things that she should've probably told her sister about a year ago. And the clips are just terrible. I gave "Party Monsters" a mildly passing review partially because its clips were all action, allowing me to just turn off my brain and watch the fighting. The clips in "Christmas Together" are mostly personal interactions between the Rangers, which is something that I'd usually like since I think story and characterization are the most important things. But for Samurai, that means having to sit through the awful acting, blatant moralizing, and dumb characters. All of this lousy and boring stuff was highlighted by the clips.

Going back to Bulk and Spike, it didn't help them any that Mike apparently pitied them (two guys the show insists that the Rangers DO NOT KNOW) so much that he just decided to give them his new motorcycle. It's so sad watching Bulk reduced to a mentally challenged charity case, unfit to care for the even dumber kid who's apparently been dumped on him. And what was up with that ending? Their ET imitation was just so out there.

I didn't even know if I could write a review for this, since again, a Christmas time clip show ought to be impossible to screw up. But once again, Samurai finds a way. This was just painful.

I personlly though it was good, MUCH better than Part Monsters. It showed good bonding moments between the five core rangers, and AT LEAST ANTONIO GOT HIS MENTION AND HAD STEVEN SKYLAR IN IT SINCE IT WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE CLASH OF THE RED RANGERS SPECIAL.

Meh, another clip show. Mike over-acting as a 6 year old wasn't really necessary. They could've fit in a 30 sec-1 min clip on how Mike gave away his bike to Bulk and Spike.

2.5/5.

First off I have to mention the promo for the episode where they say it's the first ever holiday special. Uh hello Saban you had two christmas specials in MMPR and one in Zeo. Now I know the little kids who watch Samurai will probably not know about them but it just bugged me for some reason. As far as the Christmas specials go it's definitely better than Alpha's Magical Christmas (what isn't) but not as good as I'm Dreaming of a White Ranger and A Season to Remember. Saying that I do think it was a good episode for this season. It was nice to see the rangers having fun without having to go save the day. I liked that they had more Bulk and Spike scenes although I do find that their interaction isn't as good as Bulk and Skull in the old days. The letter was a cute way to go about the flashbacks and it showed a little more of Emily's personality. I felt sorry for Mike when he kept looking for his present and wasn't getting one. I thought it was nice that he gave his bike away after being so dissapointed about not getting a present. They didn't really expand Jayden, Mia and Kevin's personalities that much. I also enjoyed that they mentioned the Emily/Mike relationship even though it wasn't said outright that they were together/dating. Ji was better than usual. They gave him a little more personality although he still seemed a little stiff to me.

I am fed up with the bashing of the characters. It is outright uncalled for. The cast was actually better than a lot of past seasons. Heck, this episode beat the downer "A Season to Remember" mainly because it didn't show them fighting evil during the holidays. This is why I seldom come on here anymore. Do you guys even remember these are children's shows? My 14 year old daughter liked this episode and I highly feel she has more weight to her opinion than a lot of those who rated this episode "poor." She has been a fan of PR since she was five.

Now I like this episode, it was nice to see that we got a Christmas Special.

I'm betting to explain the absence of Antonio was the fact that he could've gone and left to spend Christmas with his Dad, I mean we know that he did leave with his Dad. Though it would've been nice to have a little explanation on that. Also I think they should've tried to get Jason Narvy for this episode as well. How I'd write it in, would be Spike contacts his Dad to come for a visit to surprise Bulk for Christmas. Just saying that'd be my idea.

But all in all I think it was nice to get two clip shows. The Halloween one was directed more from the Nighlok's point of view with the fighting, where as this one took more of the non-morphed scenes for the character approach. I just hope Power Rangers Super Samurai will be beet it.

Yeah, but the fact that it was on a computer made it even dumber. Emily can e-mail her sister any time she wants. Why's she telling Serena about minor stuff that happened almost a year ago?

O.92
12-10-2011, 07:37 PM
^I thought the same thing. Your sister is sickly. Meanwhile, you're completely untrained and you're going to become a Ranger to fight a bunch of killers. And not once during the year did you bother to contact her to let you know you're safe or at least see how she's doing? Being that she's sickly and everything? If I'm Serena and I don't hear from my sister, who's off fighting a bunch of crazy monsters hellbent on killing her, for a whole year, I probably think she's dead. Honestly.

I would never show my son a series with morals as weird and sketchy as these. These characters are effectively indoctrinated to serve in a cult. Samurai, like Overdrive, is an anathema to how children's storytelling should be done.

Decent choise of scene from which Ranger
Bulk prepares a present to Spike

Mia Cooking scenes
Emily mentions Antonio
Learn worked as a Team"Never Give Up"
Bulk and Spike memories
Emily continues to tells abou the memories
Mike loves Christmas
Bulk and Spike presents
Santa have been in Shiba House
Bulk and Spike ride with style

If we consider this is the Return of the Christmas episodes since "Season to Remember" or "I am Dreaming with White Ranger" because the Past Seasons dont have such episodes like this is prety awesome episode for PR Samurai.

The PR "Samurai" Season 1 The Ends with "Christmas Together,Friends Forever" the shows ends with this episode as good episode of the "Samurai" now we have to wait for "Super Samurai" with New Power ups,New Villans,Megazords and Gear.

"Super Samurai" the Second half of "Samurai" but is awesome know Saban/Nick decide to continues the show and not just end because will this Second Half with more Original Footage and "Shinkenger" footage.

He's a fisherman, not a fully trained Samurai. He only learned himself what Jayden showed him. So it makes sense that he's not there. However, they are friends and he should definitely be there in my opinion because... you know... it's Santa time.

Anyway, because it's close to Christmas and because I'm already feeling Christmasy, I'm going to say that the episode was awesome. ;)

Which is a dumb moral to begin with.

Not to mention, 2 episodes later in 'Day Off', they almost contradict that and preach the moral that you need to have balance in your life, and need to just get away and have some fun every once in a while.

The real question why was Kobayshi credited for this episode when it didn't use any new Sentai footage or used any plot from Shinkenger.

Having fun does not equate to seeing relatives. They can go out and such, however briefly, but that does not contradict the not seeing friends or family rule by itself.

@Chris: They were still allowed to see friends and family (they didn't make a huge deal of it in Shinkenger), it's just that their duty came first more often than not.

Shinkenger has episodes featuring Mako's parents, Chiaki's father, and an old friend of Ryunosuke. Kotoha also receives post from her sister, and we see Ryunosuke's dad when he gets the arrow summons, just like we did in PRS (except they were rehearsing kabuki instead of at a swim meet). So yeah, no explicit ban from seeing friends and family there.

Yeah, it kind of did. Even in Shinkenger it was the fact that Chiaki had run off from training that was the main problem. Plus, I don't think Christmas is quite as big in Japan as it is in America, not really sure though. One thing to keep in mind though is that in Shinkenger the Red Ranger was the lord, and the others were his retainers. So for them to stay, and spend Christmas with him made a lot more sense.

One last note I just remembered. In the show it's made clear that the other rangers (and the mentor) are making the choice of cutting themselves off from friends and family. Especially the mentor's focus episode which is incredibly heart wrenching.

Shinkenger he have the Red Ranger is a Lord and they could have to been stay there unless in special occasion are allowed to them go and be with there friends and familys.

They have to cut with the outise world connections for maybe dont put the Families and friends and danger, the Opening credits we can notace really much the sound effects and they keep Bulk and Spike there and with the scenes with we see in Origins Opening.

The one thing about this episode that bugs the ever living crap out of me is at the end when Mike gave his motorcycle to Bulk and Spike. Now, him giving it to them wasn't what bugged me, but how they wrote it in. This is like one of the only times a Ranger interacts with Bulk and Spike (the second actually, the first was when Bulk held the door open for them way back in like episode 3 or 4) and it happened OFF SCREEN? Now that I finally have a chance to catch up with this episode, here are MY notes:

-With all of the things the Rangers can do with their symbol powers (make doubles, summon horses), they can't use their symbol power to put the decorations on the tree?
(Intro)
-You can see who Emily is writing to, I wonder if anyone's gonna try to email that address for real. lol
-When she finished talking about Mia, I thought for sure she was gonna mention something about her less than good cooking skills. lol
-Bulk's bike?! When in Zordon's name did Bulk EVER ride a bike? And motorcycle with sidecar (from the Turbo movie) doesn't count.
-"...Learned to trust each other completely". Kinda sounds like Tommy and Jason. :)
-This episode is taking place on Christmas Eve...and I am watching it on Christmas Eve. ;) Cool.
-Emily's right, Mike IS a big kid. "SANTA CAME!" He reminds me of Fuller here from Home Alone 2.
-Ji is being a jerk. He's screwing with Mike....Mike looks like he's about to cry.
-Wait! Where's Antonio? Doesn't he live with them?
-"There are some good recipes in there. You should read it." real subtle, Kevin. lol
-A "green" bike. Nice.
-Am I the only one surprised Mike hasn't used his symbol power to summon mistletoe? ;)
-Anyone notice Santa had 9 reindeer but the lead deer had NO red nose?
-Nice addition of a flying Bulk and Spike.
-I would've LOVED them to put Xandred at the end saying something like "Bah humbug". lol

I thought the episode was even dumbed down for children. Look at the adult themes in the original MMPR and subsequent seasons, and the kids loved it. However, Samurai is overly juvenile and it's either really bad acting, really bad scripting, or a blend of both. As Saban's return to the Power Ranger brand, this whole season is an insult to past fans. Throwing Bulk in is nice, but the dynamic will never be the same. These characters aren't in high school and don't have that social dynamic that can be used in the story.

I think the over-acting is what really hurts the plot, because if things occur more naturally there is no need for it. I honestly could care less for any one of these characters, because there is no connection to them. It might not be the same for others, but they don't feel like actual personalities to me. The acting is just bad. Oddly enough Bulk and Spike for as ridiculous as they are, are more realistic characters. I just hope the writing gets much better, and the performances aren't so dialed-in. This still feels like a Disney season, and even they did a better job at times.

I liked it. Best line in the whole ep to me was Kevin's "There are some good recipes in there. You should read it." LOL....

Well... this has been sitting in my "Downloads" folder for a while now... I guess now's as good a time as any to watch it.

Oh hey, these guys! Where were they the last few episodes?

Nice bike! Too bad Bulk's forced line reading sounds awful.

Umm... Mentor in a ski cap and winter jacket carrying a tree image is just... bizzare.

Grammar fail? Or what do you make of that first sentence Emily?

Really close, eh? /fanwank

Ok, that flashback was actually kinda funny.

Emily's narration is actually not too bad, but it makes me think of something... I'll talk about it at the end.

Oh look, Antonio! And... there he goes...

Again, the narration is good. However, the framing device results in only a few awkward "real time" shots, pretty much just Emily at a computer. Kinda bland.

In retrospect, some of these moments were actually pretty awesome and fun... not a total failure.

God help Paulie, he's really trying, but what he's given to work with is just schlock.

Oh no... BAD CHRISTMAS MEMORIES from seeing Mike covered in bows and bells. Oh, and a shift in framing... actual effort, in a clip show of all things!

It's been a while since I watched... but help me remember, please. When did Brit's acting surpass Erika's? Because this narration is kinda awful.

Did Najee's balls drop during that line? Seriously, it cracked pretty good there.

DON'T LOOK AT MIKE!! THE NIGHTMARES!!!

Oh hey, Antonio! Who's... not...... here......... >_>

Ah yes, the worst acting of the year, courtesy of the 5 year olds.

As a former music major, I've always enjoy tertiary form (A-B-A), so this framing is actually kinda cool for me.

Ah... a flashback to Najee's bad acting. And it's funny that he made that sunscreen joke since... well, you know.

Bulk and Spike flashback is kinda their high point of the past several episodes.

I've really enjoyed this narration, really.

"Santa came?" Boy, they are REALLY trying to play down to the little kids... oh well.

Did anyone notice that "Santa" didn't come to Bulk and Spike? Not a present to be seen...

Awwww... the "I didn't get a present" trick. Cute. And since when does Jayden play baseball?

Najee with a well delieved line! Kind of a trolling present, though.

Oh snap! I'd love to be Mike right now. Pretty good bike, IMHO!

Poor CGI effect FTW!

Say what? Nice to have Mike doing that, since he's usually considered the slacker guy of the group.

What? What?! WHAT?! What was that shot? Crappy Santa CGI, and an ET motorbike? Nice to see that Bulk and Spike were those guys, but seriously, that was such a weird way to end it! Whatever...

Overall, I'd have to say that for a clip show... this was REALLY rather good. The last act of the episode was sporadic and confusing enough to drop it to a "Good" rating, but a high one at that...

And now, for what I was going to say before. Emily's narration put emphasis on the "learning a lesson" bit of the show, and that's what got me thinking... Does PR really need to teach a lesson anymore? Yeah, since it's kinda a reboot, many young kids haven't seen or learned this yet, but still, after 700+ episodes, I think PR's taught all it has to teach. Maybe my problem with the show is that at times it tries too much to teach a lesson and not often enough just entertains the audience. I understand it's aimed toward younger children, who can always learn things from shows like this, but as I said before, what HASN'T PR tried to teach us at one point or another. Hell, in DT we learned about cultural tolerance, of all things! Like I said, maybe when PR just entertains us without having to teach us a lesson, it'll start getting REALLY good. But that's just my $0.02.

^Well technically the morphin rangers saved Santa in 1993 so Santa's been real in PR for about 2 decades. As for the lessons it lets them add that E for education to the raiting so Samurau can be showen in classes! More Viewers!

Well, since Master Ji wasn't as strict with Antonio, he may have went to visit his folks.

Aww! A sentimental ep. It makes me wonder though what the hell Bulk does for money. I know he once owned a bar with Skull but what now?
