"Welcome to Venus Island" - were Jason and Tommy going to spar?

Interspersed in tiny snippets throughout the Official MMPR Fan Club Video are behind-the-scenes shots showing the filming of Youth Center scenes, apparently for "The Power Stealer" and "Welcome to Venus Island". What we see of the latter is different than what ended up in the episode. In particular, Jason is shirtless for some reason.

Tommy's clothes here are what he wore in a "Mighty Morphin' Mutants" scene, but with a bandana and belt added. Trini is standing with the teens rather than protecting Hallie from the Bulk and Skull interrogation.

Hm....they must've had wardrobe changes until they found the right combo of outfits. Nice find. Obviously The Power Stealer and Welcome to Venus Island (and I'm pretty sure the episode in between those two was The Beetle Invasion) were all filmed at one time if they had Austin shirtless when he was rehearsing scenes. Not that I'm complaining about that. ;)


But to address your question: It does make you wonder why they had that at all. I wonder if that was just for a behind the scenes shot. I don't think they were going to have them spar, but that's just me.

They always film 3 to 4 episodes at a time in what they call "clusters".

As for Austin, either this was indeed a deleted scene, or maybe he was filming something for "The Green Ranger Kata" video? Maybe it was originally intended to include both Jason and Tommy instead of Tommy only? Nah maybe not.
