Season Summary

Mahou Sentai Magiranger is the twenty-ninth installment of the Super Sentai franchise. While several Sentais have had magical/mystical themes, Magiranger was the first to go all the way with it. An interesting tidbit about Magiranger is that for Super Hero Time 2005, Toei had Hibiki represented everything about the east, while Magiranger represented everything about the west. Magi Shine's mecha, Travelion, was the inspiration for Kamen Rider Den-O's Denliner.


A war between the Infershia and Magitopia had occurred unbeknownst to humans. The Underground Hades Empire Infershia are from the Kedomono Realm at the center of the Earth, which was ruled by the mysterious N Ma. Fifteen years ago, N Ma created the Hades Gate to send his entire army to Earth, but was stopped by the Heavenly Saint Blagel.

After being imprisoned within the Earth for fifteen years, the Infershia have returned to get revenge from their imprisonment. When the Infershia attack, five siblings witness their mother change in front of them and she hands them MagiPhones to transform into a magic team. Now endowed with magic powers, these five vow to live up to their family's legacy. They have yet to discover many more family secrets

N Ma uses his agents to break the seal so he can conquer the surface world. However, over time, some of the Infershians began to realize N Ma's insane obsession of destroying Magitopia and the Ozu Family was reckless due to needless deaths. Once N Ma was destroyed, Hades Goddess Sphinx took over the Infershia to rebuild their world and start anew with Magitopia.

Kai, Magi Red, was the first past sentai member to test the Gokaiger and see if they are worthy of obtaining Magiranger's Greater Power, as well as tell the Gokaigers about the existence of Greater Powers of the past 34 sentais. He has matured noticeably and talks in a calmer and slower manner compared to how he used to when he was a Magiranger. He handed the Greater Powers over to the Gokaigers, acknowledging Don's display of courage to help Marvelous when the later is in danger. The Magiranger’s Greater Power is a modified version of Magi Dragon. Tsubasa, Magi Yellow, appeared in the previous anniversary series, GoGo Sentai Boukenger, along side Hikaru, Magi Shine, to aid the Boukenger by each providing one of the different spirits embodied by the Super Sentai. This was mostly done because a lot of fans were upset there wasn't going to be a Boukenger Vs. Magiranger movie so Tsubasa and Hikaru were included to compensate that.

Dunno why some people dislike Magiranger, but I like it quite a bit. It is also nice to see a real romance blossom in a sentai series, although it wasn't given as much development as I would've like.

I love the Magiranger suits, they are my favorites, bar none; the capes, the helmets, the black bars that create a giant "M", it's all perfect.

EDIT: Okay, I didn't realize we were talking about all the suits and not just the main team's original suits; MagiMother's suit is awesome, halfway between the regular suits and the Legend Mode suits, and speaking of, the Legend Mode suits are damn fine suits. MagiShine's suit is great simply for all the glitter on the armor to make it nice and shiny, lol, and the Wolzard suit is great in both purple and crimson, very powerful.

My favorites suit so far. They are pretty cool, they are perfect for a serie about magic and original. The Magical Sister's suits are my favorites. Don't especially like Wolzard's and hikaru-senshi 's suit though.

I was giving members extra time for the Bonus Lap questions... there was some miscommunication between CD and myself since he went away for the weekend and Pink Racer and the Wings wouldnt have got a shot if I didnt leave them stickied for a little longer.

It is ironic that we lined things up nicely... not to mention the Rescue theme of GoGoV works with Gobusters and the GoGo just appeared in Akibaranger via Boukenred



I like the male suits and blues... Something about the leggings with pink didn't work for me... I also didn't get why they had two bird saints or why green had a head, blue a tail, and pink wings yet red and yellow were entire birds

Didn't like wolzard fire.... Purple looked better

You know, as much as I liked the show, I've never liked the suits. The big 'M' on the suits just didn't work for me and I think they could have done a better job on the visors. Shine was too clunky looking for me. I liked how regally and knightly Mother looked, but the shoulder pads didn't worked for me. And I prefer Wolzard purple than crimson.

Ah Magiranger, I believe I watched this one after finishing Bouken. One of the few themes I loved about this was family. I really outta try out GoGoV and Fiveman >>;

The suits were quite nice. Very shiny and pulls off the magical theme really well.

Okay, first question:

What did you think of the suits?

I love the suits, and I found them to be extremely creative. I also do not really like the silver mouth plate that PR fans obsessed about (just because MMPR & Zyuranger had it), and I'm far more receptive to Magiranger's usage of mystic animal's silhouette to create the visor for each ranger.

Aside from the helmet, I also like the body part of the suit and the cape that came with them. The best-designed suits are probably MagiShine and Dark Knight Wolzard/Wolzard Fire. Even MagiMother's suit is nice. The only suits I don't like very much are the Legendary versions of the five main rangers; I prefer the original suits much more over their upgraded ones.

A lot of Sentai other than Magiranger have romances. What about Jetman, Timeranger, Abaranger, Maskman, and more? IMO the romance was one of the weakest things in this series. It was silly, gratuitous, cheesy, and felt more like a soap opera than Super Sentai to me.

Suits: I really liked the designs for this series, though I agree with the poster who said that more silver would have had a better effect.

Okay, first question:

What did you think of the suits?

Plain and simple? I love them; the longer gloves, the capes, the helmets. It all comes together in a way that allows you to see the unique aspects of each one of the Ozu, but you can tell they are the same family. To spread the theme even further: Magiking's suit...there is a reason why it's my favorite Sentai mecha, and it stems from it's first appearance, lifting its hat. By about halfway through, there's a scene where Magiking is smirking when lifting its hat, and it was...well, that's when it was cemented that Magiking became my favorite mecha.

I have mixed feelings about the other mecha suits; MagiLegend was, to me, a big letdown from Magiking. Travelion was okay, fitting MagiShine's theme. Wolkaiser was probably my second favorite design.

I also felt a connection to this sentai because I'm a middle child of five myself and I love the color blue.

I just don't end up marrying a Sun God who has a train fetish.

I swear, the order is the exact same except the youngest in my family is a girl, not a boy.

They're not repeating though, they're calling out the spells for them to transform (Maagi Magi Magiiro), to become Majins (Maagi Magi Magiika), combine into MagiDragon (Maagi Jiruma Jinga), and combining into MagiKing (Maagi Jiruma Magi Jinga).

The actors were OK with the exception of Hiroya Matsumoto (who I think is generally a bad actor, I've seen him in other things) and Asami Kai (Urara is so flat and dull that even the best of actresses would be hard put to do anything with her.) For the characters ... there were very few in the cast I liked, with the exception of Kai and a few side characters including Smokey and Magiel

The thing I liked about Infershia was how it grew in power and complexity alongside the Magirangers; it starts with Branken and the Hades Beasts, then Meemy and the Hades Beastmen, and then the Infershia Pantheon, who have really great designs and dynamics and are just so extremely powerful...and then of course there's Vancuria, who is great, Wolzard is awesome, and N.Ma,when he finally shows himself, is truly the stuff of nightmares.

Nai and Mea were incredibly irritating. They didn't do anything useful, and there was really no point to them since we already had a "stupid girl" character, Houka. Did there have to be three? Wolzard Fire was OK as a villain but boring when he goes back to being Isamu. However, I like the way the Infershia grew in power and strength over the course of the series (as someone mentioned) and on the whole they were way more likeable than the heroes

Miyuki was a wonderful, perfect human being, and her defeat at Wolzard's hands was a necessary tragedy to propel the rest of the story, but was still handled really well; it helps that she was fully prepared for the possibility of her downfall, yet tried her hardest anyway.

Who was your favorite Ozu sibling right of that bat?

I like all the Ozu siblings, so it is hard to decide. When I was watching the series, I like Houka alot better she's not just funny, she's also attractive. I also like Makito's big sibling personality and comedic nature, and I found Kai to be a brash but very interesting "leader" of the team. I like Urara and Tsubasa as well, but perhaps a little less than the other three.


What did you think of the cast?

I think everyone is cast perfectly. Originally, I thought the actor for Tsubasa wasn't very good, but he did grow on me eventually.


What did you think of Infershia?

Infershia is great, particularly with Nai & Mea and Wolzard, and the ten gods of Pantheon were also imposing. I did have a problem with the gods going against Magiranger one by one due to their laws or something, but I suppose the Ozu siblings would've been defeated if that happened.


What did you think of Miyuki and her death?

I thought it was a powerful and sobering moment, for a series that later turned out to be a bit more lighthearted that I realized.

Mandora Boy could be amusing, but he did have a problem early on of interrupting the more dramatic scenes. The Magi Majins were cool, especially how they were all humanoid and Taurus was huge while Fairy was tiny. Magi Dragon was definitely really nice and there were some good scenes filmed around out that were just a bit reminiscent of Ryuuseioh flying around.

I honestly never got the hate toward Mandora Boy. He honestly wasn't even that annoying. Plus, I thought it was kinda neat how he was kinda a mentor towards the Ozus before Hikaru showed.

As for the MagiMajins, I always thought it was pointless to give Red a phoenix, yet make Magi Phoenix a humanoid. And blue really got the short end of the stick. MagiDragon was pretty cool, having it be made up of the first four.

I could imagine making phoenix a humanoid if it was a female (i.e. harpy) but it made no sense especially with the thunderbird... talk about double standards

MagiKing is one of my favorite recent mecha. I like Yuka and he relationship with Kai. Heavenly Saints's design is great and i like the idea of Magitopia.

MagiKing is a really great mecha and I love it when they start having him do his flying finisher. Yuka Yamazaki's a sweet girl with a little bit of subtle development over the course of the series, and her relationship between her and Kai was adorable. The Heavenly Saints and Magitopia were very good and well thought out with strong designs and histories to them.

Yuka Yamazaki is useless, she's just a one-note love interest for Kai. A completely flat character.

I really liked MagiKing. To me, the mecha and overall designs were the best thing about this series.

The Heavenly Saints/Magitopia world building was a good concept, however I found the characters unlikeable, particularly Hikaru.

magiking was surprisingly good... kai's love interest was ok...

the saints seemed a tad boring to me... blagel/flagel seemed redundant and then the snow princess or whatever that saint was seemed redundant with magimother despite her not being a saint

What did you think of MagiKing, Yuka Yamazaki, and the concept of Heavenly Saints and Magitopia?

MagiKing is easily one of the most impressive-looking zord from Super Sentai imo. I think Yuka Yamazaki is nice early on, but after she was allured to Kai's secret identity in the movie, the writers did not seize the opportunity to let these two become a couple, and instead just dropped the whole storyline altogether. What a waste. I like the concept of Heavenly Saints and Magitopia because they did it in such a way to make the whole theme about magic seemed much more expansive and seeing how other people possessing magic abilities far beyond the Magirangers is a real treat.

I agree it was kinda redundant to have two fire saints, but I don't see how Snowgel was. Every Magician has their own Heavenly Saint, so it makes sense Miyuki would have a snow-based Saint to give her snow-based powers.

MagiMajins are really cool and i always loved the ideia of the Sentai became the Own Mechas something it as keep for futher Sentais like Gekirangers.

The MagiKing it was Massive and i loved the Battles between the Monsters and MagiKing and is final strikes were great and Heavenly Saints and Magitopia were awesome, well i really enjoyed show up in MF(Mystic Tribune)and i always loved the suits of the Saints.

I just checked my reviews I had done about magiranger episodes and now I can say more. It was awesome and mysterious that Kai made that spell from out of nowhere and send back Branken. Still can't remember when Wolzard stole the magirangers ability to become magiking. In which episode that was?

That was the same episode; Wolzard became WolKaiser, Kai tries to initiate MagiKing, WolKaiser steals MagiKing magic and uses that to release Branken, and he's still got it by the end of the episode.

They were great. I'm glad that Rin get to use Firekaiser, and its battle against Wolzard was terrific. Since I love MagiKing seeing it making a comeback was a treat.

I thought Rin was an interesting character, and her personality as Lunagel being so different than Rin was quite a surprise. I thought the story about the Key to the Gate was one of the stronger moments in Magiranger.

Ah, that two-parter; That was a big WHAM mini-arc that did a lot. It removed Branken as a villian, showed that the Magiranger could beat Wolzard, and it featured their mother. Everything about these two episodes worked for me, from action, writing, characters, and acting. This was the episode that I think the cast were fully settled into their roles, and it started to show.

I found it interesting how we started with the bestial and instinctive Hades Beasts, and then moved on to the (on average) intelligent and cunning Beast Men; it signaled a shift in the story, that things were going to be a touch more complex, which I like.

Sungel/Hikaru/MagiShine is great; he is cool, calm, and confident, and he takes it upon himself to do his best to bring the Ozu Siblings up to his level, which gives him a lot of great interactions with everyone. Plus, he's a ladies man who doesn't come off as skeevy or creepy, which I greatly appreciate.

Travelion is a beast of a tank of a mecha, and I love that its finishing move is to absorb the monster of the week into its furnace to burn for fuel. Also, the fact that Travelion can take everyone into Marudeyona Worlds/Replica Realms expands on the stories that can be told, which is a good thing.

Hikaru is one of the most great sentai I've ever seen, million times better than Daggeron. It was great he got married with Urara. So touching moment and unique in the toku history!
Travelion was nice. Loved that it could travel across time. Reminded me Hogwarts express:D

Didn't think much of the "Bride of Infershia" movie. If they wanted Yamazaki to be an interesting character they should have developed her and given her some other function as well as "generic love interest." Just putting her at the centre of a movie didn't cut it.

I always felt like that was the point. Hikaru was overconfident. He was always all "I can do this myself because I'm a Tenkuu Yuusha!", annnnd those were the time he got tossed around like a ragdoll. Despite his ego, he was a crappy fighter 90% of the time.

I liked the way the Beastmen Kings were handled; Kobold harvesting his fallen comrades, Yeti is setting up his Evil Ice, Neiris going after Rei, it shows that even though they're not attacking all at once, that they're all still doing stuff. The Golem was noteworthy mostly because of the rat-bastard way Meemy powered it, and MagiLegend is pretty nice but I think they could have done better, I would have liked another five-piece combination like MagiKing.

I will agree that this was one of my few issues with the show, that they didn't follow through Yuka knowing about Kai being MagiRed; if they had just done something like having her be there at the final reunion scene, that would have wrapped there relationship up very nicely. Oh well, nothing's perfect, not even Magiranger.

Meanwhile, over on the subject of the magic syllables used on each side, I really liked them; their use was coherent and consistent through out, making it relatively easy to figure out what each syllable meant and did which meant that when someone cast a new spell, you could figure out what that spell was likely to do before it went off.

I found Magi vs. Deka to be one of the worst Vs. Movies ever. I give them props for trying to combine the two worlds together and even continuing Sen-Chan's and Umeko's (out of nowhere) relationship, but the product was just... bad. The plot was mediocre, the whole conflict between Ban and Kai was... I don't recall it all too well, but I recall it being over something stupid, the travesties that were Jasmine's and Tetsu's vs. hair, and the ending was just random.

It was of course pretty obvious that Wolzard was Isamu, but you can definitely understand why the characters wouldn't see it coming and the buildup was good, and that moment when Kai tells him that he doesn't have any memories of his father, all he has are his memories of fighting Wolzard chokes me up every single time. The way Hikaru killed Meemy was good, but I just wish that Rin had gotten some of that action, she had just as much cause for revenge against that guy as he did. And Miyuki being alive was very good, if again obvious that they were going to do something like that; at least what they did with it led to some great scenes down the line.

What did you think of the reveal that Isamu was Wolzard, the death of Meemy, and the reveal that Miyuki was alive?

Well i saw Mystic Force before so it wasn't a surprise but i'm sure it would be a total surprise if i didn't watched MF First. I was so happy to learn that Miyuki was alive. The battle between Hikaru and Meemy was great.

Meemy defeated->I was glad. I disliked him. Anyway it was expected again because of MF

The Reveals of the Isamu was Wolzard it as predicted really well the most powerfull sacrifice to Banished the Evil Forces to there Doom.

The Death of Memmy it as awesome i really enjoyed the Final Battle between Old Rivals.

The Revela that Miyuki as alive it as cool to know.

What did you think of the Hades Beast Gods?

They are pretty interesthing powerfull cretures and i really liked of there chemestry between this Beast Gods and i liked of the Concept they are in more deeper space in the Evil Lair.

The Hades Gods are amazing, the designs for those suits are superb, their power is more than enough to call them Gods, and the dynamics between them all are very interesting and entertaining to watch.

Wyvern was my favorite of the bunch and I really like what the show did with him. From the beginning, from his soft voice and gentle personality, it kinda made you think that out of all the Gods, he would be the one most likely to turn good. But for the rest of the show, it became apparently obvious that was not going to happen because it turn out, he was actually the most loyal out of the gods.

The thing about Wyvern wass that he was all about convincing everyone around him that he was this super cool dude, and so whenever that got challenged, his true colors showed. It's good stuff.

What did you think of Magiranger Vs. Dekaranger?


Magiranger vs. Dekaranger was okay, but it just had that really off ending where everything suddenly turns really somber as everyone's all "oh right, Miyuki's still dead". It just felt weird.

This. I actually like majority of the movie, since I like both Dekaranger and Magiranger series, but the somber ending of the series put a damper on the show. Of course, the fact that later in the series Miyuki turned out alive made it seemed kind of weird when you go back to rewatch the movie with the knowledge that she wasn't really dead, after all. A more cheerful ending would've been better.


What did you think of the reveal that Isamu was Wolzard, the death of Meemy, and the reveal that Miyuki was alive?

I thought the reveal of Wolzard was Isamu was great, and unlike Darth Vader's reveal in ROTJ this was handled rather well. Meemy was rather dispicable, so seeing him finally dead was satisfying. I'm also happy to see Miyuki back, but I wish they didn't use her death in the VS movie and drag the spirit down in the end.

Oh man, Snowgel showing up, delivering the verbal smackdown onto Hikaru, and kicking Drake's *** was amazing and I loved every moment of it. And seeing Isamu rushing in as WolKentauros to fight Sleipnir on his Chariot was truly epic.

The Snowgel adult Form it as cool to see him in Battlefield and help the Magirangers, and Isamu brief return it as great see him comes to help the others and even let the NMA alone and comes to fight to Gods to save the others it as great and epic.
