Q: What was it like training to play Rose?
A: Physically, it was really tough training for all the stunts and martial arts, but fun! Training for Rose was more complicated. In some ways I found a few of her qualities similar to my own, but there were other aspects that were a little harder to relate to (ie. child genius!), and I became very anxious in the weeks leading up to day 1 of filming. It all worked out in the end, and I became a lot more comfortable with the whole "ranger thing" and actually grew to really love my character.
Q: Was it hard for you getting into the role of Rose?
A: Only at the very beginning, but it got easier as we went along, and by the end Rose had actually become a part of me!
Q: What characteristics do you believe you have in common with Rose?
A: I really liked some of her wardrobe, and actually ended up taking some of it home! We both had a fascination with ancient Greek mythology, and I also love to read, but perhaps slightly different books, but those are hobbies and interests. Characteristics? Once Rose learned to have fun, we became a little more alike! I've been told that we both have this "sweetness" which has often gotten me out of trouble in the past, especially growing up! Just flash the smile and say "who, me? Never!"
Q: What was your favorite part of the show and what part, if any, did you just hate?
A: I have too many favorite moments in the show, but one of them was definitely filming "Pirate In Pink". Rosie the Bold was just too fun to play with! Didn't really hate anything, apart from those days when it was so hot and we had to wear the black OO uniform. Oh, and the one time I got slightly sunburnt.
Q: Would you like to be on future Power Ranger seasons?
A: I'd love to! So write to the producers and tell them to write me in!
Q: What is the most memorable, joyful, or happy memory when filming “Once a Ranger”?
A: I guess it was meeting and working with the past rangers. It was quite exciting finding out exactly who was coming back. The script read-through was cool.
Q: What’s it like working with James?
A: James was absolutely awesome to work with. We got on really well, in fact, we often made each other laugh on set!
Q: How do you and Caitlin get along on and off set?
A: Caitlin is such a sweetheart. We hung out on and off set quite a lot, and did lots of girlie stuff together, like shopping!
Q: How does it feel that you are the first Philippine Pink Ranger?
A: I'm not sure if I'm the first Filipina pink ranger, but it feels great to represent the Philippines either way!
Q: How did you audition even though you are in London?
A: They held castings (auditions) in quite a few countries all over the world I heard. I just got a call from my agent one day saying that the producers wanted to see me for the role, and the next thing I know, the sides for the casting were emailed to me for me to learn!
Q: Can you speak any Philipeno, and if so, what dialect?
A: I understand Filipino fluently and also speak it (badly!) I don't know any other dialects other than Tagalog, which I believe we're supposed to call Filipino now, but please correct me if I'm wrong!
Q: Why does your character, Rose, always yells before attacking when she is invisible?
A: Sometimes because I was directed to yell, sometimes because I wasn't aware they'd turn me invisible, and sometimes because I'd be so into the action that I'd get carried away!
Q: Have you ever seen any clips of the Overdrive Sentai counterpart, Boukenger?
A: During training, we were able to watch clips of Boukenger, which I found very interesting (even though it was hard to understand what was going on as it was all in Japanese!). My very first impression of my Japanese counterpart was that she was very pretty! I was fascinated with how different her character was to the role I was about to portray, which I guess makes sense, since they were written as totally different characters! She seemed to be doing a great job, and came across as a strong, intelligent and cool female, which was exactly what I wanted Rose to be like too.
Q: What is your favorite Operation Overdrive episode?
A: I have to say that ‘Pirate In Pink’ was one of my favorite episodes!
Q: Was it difficult portraying a genius?
A: I think the most difficult thing about playing a genius was being able to convincingly deliver all the long and complicated words and terminology, without stumbling over them, especially when the director wanted me to say my lines fast without pausing!
Q: What are some of your favorite comic books?
A: I love reading books. One of my favorite collections is His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, but I haven't read many comics (apart from Betty and Veronica when I was really young and a couple of X-men ones), so I don't really have any favorites.
Q: As a child, did you ever think you’d make it into the business?
A: As a child, I never thought that one day I'd have fans! I think I wanted to be a nurse at one point, and then, like so many young girls, I wanted to be a ballerina, and then a backing dancer for the likes of Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul! I didn't pursue acting until I graduated from college a few years ago.
Q: Was it hard adjusting to that American accent?
A: As for the American accent, I didn't find it too hard, and I got more and more used to it as we went along. We also had a lot of help from the dialect coach on and off set for the odd word here and there, but the accent very quickly began to feel so natural that I now prefer to read scripts in American! As an actor, I'm very used to being asked to read scripts (at castings) in an American accent, so it's a useful, if not essential, skill to have in this business.
Q: Have you ever gotten sick of wearing pink?
A: Pink has always been my favorite color, so I was thrilled when I found out that Rose was going to be the pink ranger (they didn't tell me what color she was until they offered me the part) and I still love the color, so the answer is no, I didn't ever get sick of wearing pink! I did, however, get frustrated with the Operation Overdrive black uniform. Wearing black in the height of summer is not very comfortable, so I was very relieved whenever we got to wear our civilian clothes!
Q: How was it filming ‘Finding Neverland’ with Johnny Depp?
A: I only had a small part in the movie, so I didn't spend a lot of time with him, but I have to say that Johnny Depp was lovely in person. He was very friendly and seemed down-to-earth (not diva-ish at all). It was really nice how he had time to even talk to the smaller characters, though I was still very star struck and shy around him, he's also very gorgeous!
Q: Have you seen any previous Power Ranger seasons?
A: I only really watched the Mighty Morphin’ series (and film), which was when I was growing up. I was also given the chance to see the first couple of episodes of SPD and Mystic Force during training, to see how the show has evolved and what to expect.
Q: Do you still stay in contact with the Overdrive cast?
A: I have definitely kept in touch with all the OO team. They have become some of my closest friends, so I hope to always stay in contact.
Q: Rhoda, have you ever been interested in dramatic acting?
A: Definitely!
Q: How do you relate to the rest of the cast members?
A: I love all the cast members. We all got along really well.
Q: Who did you hang out with at Morphicon?
A: Mainly the Overdrive gang, for obvious reasons, and a few of the Morphicon staff members.
Q: How did it feel to meet cast members of other seasons?
A: It was a real honor to meet the other cast members. They were all so friendly.
Q: What were some of the negative things about working on the set of Power Rangers?
A: Being so far away from home and my loved ones and the long hours on set.
Q: Do you intend on watching future PR seasons?
A: Yes, when and if I can.
Q: Did you like your genetic power of invisibility?
A: I really liked the power of invisibility. It's a shame I didn't get to use it more!
Q: If you could have a different genetic power, what would it be?
A: If I could choose a power it would be the power to control/move things with my mind. Is that just being lazy?
Q: How was it wearing the Power Ranger costume?
A: The Power Ranger costume was actually quite uncomfortable, especially at the beginning because they were so new and stiff! My poor feet!
Q: Did you enjoy the first scene of ‘One Gets Away’, where Rose ends up in the water?
A: The first scene was a lot of fun to do. The only problem was that the water was cold, but apart from that, I really didn’t mind doing it.
