Anyways, carry on with the discussion in this new thread

Is anyone else kind of pissed at why everyone says that the Rays are a good team? It's only because they sucked for so many years that they got first pick each year!

And no I am not angry about the ALCS from last year

I agree, but that is the other side for me. My battle is with the Mariners and Angels :p. I hope the A's continue to build the pitching staff. It's hard to pay attention to the A's roster cause they keep calling up players from Sacramento.

It figures that this happened while the board was down:

LOS ANGELES -- Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974) joined a growing lineup of All-Stars linked to drugs Thursday, with the dreadlocked slugger banished for 50 games by a sport that cannot shake free from scandal.
The Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad) star said he did not take steroids and was prescribed medication by a doctor that contained a banned substance.
"It's a dark day for baseball and certainly for this organization," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told reporters on the field at Dodger Stadium. "This organization will never condone anything that isn't clean."
The commissioner's office didn't announce the specific violation by the 36-year-old outfielder, who apologized to the Dodgers and fans for "this whole situation."
However, testing by Major League Baseball showed that Ramirez had testosterone in his body that was not natural and came from an artificial source, two people with knowledge of the case told ESPN's Mark Fainaru-Wada and T.J. Quinn. The sources said that in addition to the artificial testosterone, Ramirez was identified as using the female fertility drug human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG.
The sources said Ramirez was suspended for using hCG because baseball had documentation to prove his use of the drug. A Major League Baseball source said Ramirez's representatives indicated they would fight a suspension for using artificial testosterone.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Andy Sonnanstine delivered after a pregame mistake forced the pitcher to bat Sunday, hitting an RBI double in the Tampa Bay Rays' 7-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The game was delayed 13 minutes before the bottom of the first due to a lineup card error by the Rays that listed both Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria as the third baseman. Longoria was supposed to be the designated hitter, but Tampa Bay lost the DH position because of the snafu and was forced to put Sonnanstine in the third spot of the lineup.

Sonnanstine (2-4) went 1 for 3, including a run-scoring double in the fourth. He also reached on a failed sacrifice in the first and struck out looking in the third.

SEATTLE -- San Francisco Giants star pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former star at the University of Washington was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 in the town of Hazel Dell, about four miles north of the Oregon border, on Oct. 30.

An officer approached Lincecum's 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana as the pitcher rolled down his window. Schatzel said Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe from the car's center console.

The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel said police consider that a small amount for personal use, well below the maximum of 40 grams before possession is classified differently and carries a more severe penalty.

NEW YORK -- Mark McGwire (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=1738) finally came clean, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998, but he also said he didn't need performance-enhancing drugs to hit the long ball.
McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade. Later Monday, however, he disputed that the drugs gave him more power to hit homers.
"I was given a gift to hit home runs," he told Bob Costas on MLB Network.
He told Costas that studying pitchers and making his swing shorter led to his increase in home runs and that he could have hit them without PEDs.
"I truly believe so," McGwire said. "I believe I was given this gift. The only reason I took steroids was for health purposes."

I like baseball and all, but why does it have to be the number one sport where players using steroids is at an all-time high number?! That sad fact keeps turning me off from watching games, even when they get interesting, cause you never know if the strongest player is naturally strong or is using a stupid cop out to amplify more strength into a pitch or a bat strike...

For the record, if i ever do play baseball for a team, i swear i will NOT fall victim nor tempted to take even ONE of those horrid performance enhancers! I could care less about how many fans i had or what my average is, if i played pro baseball i just wanna play and make my strength as a pitcher or a hitter as natural as humanly possible! In other words, lots of man hours at the gym lifting weights and running the treadmill.

Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning, his family confirmed in a statement.

"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80," the family said in a statement.

"He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family -- his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren.

"He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."

The Steinbrenner family said that funeral arrangements will be private, however details about an additional public service will be announced at a later date.

The New York Daily News reported that Steinbrenner died around 6:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

WABC-TV in New York reported that Steinbrenner, the Yankees' owner since 1973, suffered a massive heart attack.
Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4, was taken to a Tampa hospital after emergency crews responded to his home Monday night.

Steinbrenner gave his sons, Hal and Hank, day-to-day control of the team in late 2007.

He told The Associated Press last week that he was "feeling good" after spending a couple hours in his office at the Yankees' spring training complex.

Under his ownership, the Yankees have won 11 AL pennants and seven World Series titles.

After considering his options and speaking with friends familiar with the Phillies' situation, including former teammate Brad Lidge, the Houston Astros' staff ace waived his no-trade clause Thursday in order to be dealt for left-handed starter J.A. Happ and two prospects, the Phillies said in announcing the trade.

Fantasy Spin: Philadelphia Freedom
Roy Oswalt was already having a solid season despite the Astros' shortcomings, posting his best strikeout rate since 2001. And he's likely to get better run support from his new team, writes Eric Karabell. Blog

"I'm glad it worked out for both of us. I wanted to go to a contender, and Houston gets some good prospects in return who will hopefully allow them to build a winning team," Oswalt told ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson.

"The hardest part about it is cleaning out my locker. I've been in the same place for 10 years and having to say goodbye and clean out the locker is the toughest part," he said.

Oswalt, who was previously scheduled to start Friday against the Brewers, said he will fly to Washington on Thursday night and start for the Phillies on Friday against the Nationals. Coincidentally, Happ was scheduled to start Friday for the Phillies.

The Phillies, who had won seven straight and were 3½ games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves entering Thursday's games, get one of baseball's best right-handers and a pitcher with playoff experience.

Oswalt said his goal was to land with a contender with a chance to play in October.

"I'm at a point in my career where I just want a chance to get back to the World Series like I did in '05 with Houston," he said. "I'm excited to be going to Philly. I love watching Roy Halladay pitch and I think with him and [Cole] Hamels the three of us can feed off each other."

Decade of Dominance
Since breaking into the big leagues in 2001, Roy Oswalt has 143 victories -- 28 more than any other NL pitcher. And his 1,593 strikeouts are the most for any NL pitcher with 100 starts since 2001.

Category Oswalt NL Rank
Wins 143 1st
ERA 3.24 5th
Strikeouts 1,593 1st
Innings 1,958 2/3 2nd

The Astros will pay $11 million of the approximately $23 million that the 32-year-old Oswalt is guaranteed through 2011, sources said.

Oswalt did not demand that his 2012 mutual option for $16 million be picked up by the Phillies, a baseball source told Nelson. Instead, if either he or the Phillies chose not to pick it up, his $1 million buyout will increase to $2 million.

If Oswalt or the Phillies decline to exercise the option, then the pitcher will make $18 million next season. But both Oswalt and the Phillies must agree on the option for 2012 for him to stay with the team that season, the source told Nelson.

"I didn't want [the option] to be a deal breaker. It wasn't about the money, it was about getting a chance to go somewhere and win," Oswalt said. "I was confident that we could always find a way to overcome that."

He said his conversation with Lidge made him confident that he'd chosen the right destination.

"We played together for seven years and I trust his opinion. He told me that the clubhouse was great and that I was going to love it over there. His opinion means a lot to me," Oswalt said.

Although the Phillies prospects have not been publicly identified, sources said the Astros will receive outfielder Anthony Gose as part of the deal and then send him to the Toronto Blue Jays. Gose is currently at Class A Clearwater in the Florida State League, where he was batting .263 with a team-high 110 hits.

Sources said the Astros pressed hard for first baseman Jonathan Singleton, considered the team's best minor league hitting prospect. Singleton is currently at Class A Lakewood in the South Atlantic League, where he was hitting .312 with 18 doubles and 12 home runs as of Thursday.

The Astros were off to a National League-worst 14-27 start when Oswalt asked for a trade May 22. As of Thursday, he was 6-12 with a 3.42 ERA.

A baseball source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres both made late efforts to land Oswalt, but got involved in the process too late.

For his career, Oswalt is 143-82 with a 3.24 ERA.

Joe Torre retires from the Dodgers

LOS ANGELES -- Three seasons in the sun with the Los Angeles Dodgers rekindled Joe Torre's love for baseball.

They also provided the former Yankees manager with the chance to leave the bench on his own terms -- and that's exactly what he'll do next month.

Torre's Turning Point

Torre Once dubbed "Clueless Joe" by a New York tabloid, Joe Torre turned that perception on its head as manager of the Yankees and until this season, the Dodgers.
Managing record Before 1996 Since 1996
Winning pct. .471 .590
Division titles 1 12
Pennants 0 6
World Series 0 4

Torre said Friday he will retire at the end of the season, although the 70-year-old skipper couldn't say with certainty that he'll never manage again. The Dodgers immediately announced hitting coach Don Mattingly will replace him in 2011.

Torre shed no tears at a news conference in Dodger Stadium before his club opened a six-game homestand against Colorado and San Diego, which have both blown past the fourth-place Dodgers in the NL West standings this season.

"Baseball has been my life, and hopefully will continue to be my life in some capacity," Torre said. "When I came out here, it was just to find out if managing can be fun again, and it's been fun. ... But you have to make some decisions by instinct, and my instinct tells me it's time to go."

Torre became one of the most famous and respected coaches in American sports during 12 winning seasons that included four championships with the Yankees, but he walked away from the club following the 2007 season, New York's fourth straight without a World Series appearance. The Yankees made a lowball contract offer that insulted Torre with its bonuses for advancing in the postseason, effectively forcing Torre to depart with his pride.

More From ESPNLosAngeles.com

For more news, notes and analysis of the Dodgers, check out Dodger Thoughts from Jon Weisman. Blog

He left New York feeling frustration and burnout -- but a call from the Dodgers persuaded him to return to the NL, where he spent most of his playing career. Although he never matched his Bronx success in Hollywood, Torre still revitalized the Dodgers while reaching the NL championship series twice.

His current club began the penultimate homestand of its season at 72-75 and in fourth place, its playoff chances all but erased.

"Three years have gone by very quickly," said Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, whose highly public divorce trial resumes Monday. "You've done some marvelous things for this organization. I know this year was a disappointment, but what you achieved is something that hasn't been achieved here in 32 years."

McCourt referred to the Dodgers' back-to-back playoff appearances and NL West titles in 2008 and 2009. Los Angeles lost both times to Philadelphia in the NL championship series.

Torre suggested he'll accept another job with the Dodgers, saying he plans to speak with general manager Ned Colletti next month about a role. The Brooklyn native plans to keep living in Southern California with his wife, who has run their charity foundation from the West Coast.

Torre also is almost certain to get quick admission to the Hall of Fame: Every manager with at least four championships except him already is in Cooperstown.

"I know that he had talked about [retiring]," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who played for Torre in New York. "It'll be interesting to see how he feels in December -- if he stays retired. Joe has been doing it a long time, and I'm sure there's other things Joe wants to do with his life. Am I surprised by it? I don't think I would have been surprised either way, because I know how much he loves to manage, but I also know how much he loves his family."

Torre turned 70 in July, and has been rumored to be interested in returning to the broadcast booth -- or even in owning a team. He has a 2,318-1,990 regular-season record in 29 major league seasons as a manager that included stints with the New York Mets, Atlanta and St. Louis.

Torre now will lead the unusually large parade of famous managers ending their careers this season. Lou Piniella walked away from the Cubs in late August, while Atlanta's Bobby Cox and Toronto's Cito Gaston also plan to hang up their caps next month.

"I'm happy that [Torre] gets an opportunity to do it when he wants to do it," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "[Mattingly] worked hard and put in a lot of time and effort being a coach and hitting coach for a long time, and now bench coach. Now he's got a chance to manage, and I'm happy for him."

Mattingly was Torre's bench coach with the Yankees, but lost out to Girardi for the top job three years ago. He then followed Torre to California, and has long been assumed to be the heir apparent.

Colletti confirmed that arrangement Friday, saying he told Torre three years ago that he wanted Torre's successor to be on his staff. Colletti and Torre then met before this season and "figured out a plan" for Mattingly to succeed Torre.

"We wanted continuity here," Colletti said. "We wanted somebody who understood our players and understood our organization."

Colletti said the Dodgers received permission from Major League Baseball to hire Mattingly without interviewing any minority candidates.

Mattingly, the former Yankees first baseman and 1985 AL MVP, has been groomed since 2004 for his first major league managing job, although he still plans to manage a team in the Arizona fall league. "Donnie Baseball" thinks he's more prepared for a top job than he was three years earlier in New York.

"It's baseball, and I've been around the game a long time," Mattingly said, citing Billy Martin, Piniella, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green alongside Torre as influences on his managerial style. "In my heart, I know I can do this. It's a belief in myself that I can do anything I put my mind to."

The Dodgers' tumultuous front-office status likely helped Torre make up his mind to leave, with owners Frank and Jamie McCourt mired in a messy, ongoing divorce trial that has affected the team's entire operation.

Los Angeles allowed slugger Manny Ramirez to leave on a waiver claim by the Chicago White Sox last month, effectively running up the white flag on a season that has gone south since the All-Star break.

"Am I going to miss it? Sure, I'm going to miss it," Torre said. "I just felt this ballclub needed a different voice, a younger voice, and there's nobody I feel more secure about turning it over to than Donnie."

I think Torres is taking more than a break. Being involved in professional baseball for 50 something years of his life, I think he rather step away to enjoy other aspects of life.

I may pull for the Texas Rangers to win the American League and World Series championships this year.

Congratulations to Bobby Cox for hitting a milestone. Unfortunately, it came later than sooner. If his team would swing the bat for a couple runs, the Braves could have won games against the Phillies and Nationals to obtain the National League East championship. Too late now, and it is either wild card or die.

Having read the article above concerning Joe Torre retiring from the Dodgers and not ruling out the possibility of managing again, would one expect him to replace Bobby Cox as the Braves manager? Torre did play for the Braves.

The Braves need to learn not to give up your division lead, then battle for the wild card position to save your season. Consistent late season meltdowns were reasons why Bobby Cox should have been fired over the past four seasons. Retiring makes up for it.

Responding to the current poll question, the American League, having the fewer teams, has better quality of baseball and produces more World Series champions. I think the Rangers, having new ownership under pitching legend Nolan Ryan, and the Yankees, defending championships playing inspired baseball in honor of the late George Steinbrenner, will advance to the American League championship finals. Whoever wins will advance and handle any National League club.

I would like to see the Braves go all out and win, sending Bobby Cox into retirement as a winner. Their late season decline of play, giving up the division lead and barely holding on to the wild card lead, will give them a first round exit, concluding an era in baseball.

No Goal! :p

The Stars were not suppose to win the Stanley Cup; neither were the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975. Mr. Green and I have strong blue and gold connections. (Thank you, New Jersey Devils, for defeating them both en route to the 2000 Stanley Cup Championship.)

The Rangers is strong but I don't see them winning it all when the spotlight is on the World Series. Yankees vs. Rangers is really possible but the Phillies are looking good.

Blueranger, you confuse me. The Yankees and Rangers will likely play each other for the American League championship, not the World Series championship. The Phillies look very good, and will likely advance to the National League championship series.

here's the leads right now:

Rays vs. Rangers (TEX leads 1-0)
Twins vs. Yankees (NYY leads 1-0)
Phillies vs. Reds (PHI leads 1-0)
Giants vs. Braves- tomorrow game 1

Rays (Shields) vs. Rangers (Wilson)- Game 2

Lincecum and Lowe should be a good matchup.

Halladay is a great product of the Toronto Blue Jays. (It is sad his former club failed to compete and attempt to keep him. Realistically, the American League's East Division is dominated by the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the serious Rays.) I wish him well.

Didn't Bret Hull score the game winning goal in OT to give the stars the cup? Even if it wasn't a goal the game would have kept going right lol

Agreed. I think Brett Hull and Dominik Hasek resolved their differences in 2002. They were on the same Stanley Cup champion team.

The Rangers stomped the Rays twice and Garza is their last chance and even if he wins they have nothing really after him in the rotation.

Hudson will pitch a great game, helping the Braves gain a 2-1 lead in their series.

The Rays may be motivated from delaying the inevitable, and will have to play perfectly to take the series. I doubt they can overcome a righted Rangers club today.
