As much as I love playoffs... Not to sound braggy, but having Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics on at the same time is not good for my work...

Is it wrong that I don't have a lot of faith in my own team?

BlackBerry billionaire Jim Balsillie has extended an offer to buy the financially-strapped Phoenix Coyotes, contingent on moving the franchise to Southern Ontario.
Balsillie has offered $212.5 million for the franchise, which has spent the past 12 seasons in the desert since leaving Winnipeg, Manitoba prior to the 1996-97 season.
"The current team ownership asked that I table an offer to purchase the Coyotes and significant discussions resulted in an offer that is in the best interests of the franchise, the NHL, and the great hockey fans of Canada and Southern Ontario," Balsillie said Tuesday in a statement.
The Coyotes filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday. The filing included the proposed sale of the franchise to PSE Sports & Entertainment, LP, a Delaware limited partnership, which would move the franchise to southern Ontario.
"Extensive efforts have been undertaken to sell the team, or attract additional investors, who would keep the team in Glendale," Jerry Moyes, the Coyotes chief executive officer, said in a statement announcing the Chapter 11 filing. "Creating a process under the supervision of a judge assures that anyone wishing to purchase the team will have the opportunity to bid.
"Likewise, the City of Glendale, which has been very cooperative with efforts to keep the team in Glendale, will be able to provide potential buyers assurances of the city's willingness to offer incentives to keep the team as a tenant in the Jobing.com arena, the lease for which is subject to rejection in bankruptcy. The process assures that the identities of the new owner and the team's location will be known by June 30, 2009, thus enabling the NHL to include the team in its 2009-10 schedule."
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement Tuesday that league has been notified of Phoenix's dire situation.
"We have just become aware of today's Bankruptcy Court filing purportedly made on behalf of the Phoenix Coyotes," Daly said. "We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the petition, including the propriety of its filing. We have removed Jerry Moyes from all positions of authority to act for or on behalf of the Club. The League will appear and proceed before the Bankruptcy Court in the best interests of all of the Club's constituencies, including its fans in Arizona and the League's 29 other Member Clubs."
Sources tell ESPN.com's Scott Burnside the NHL will oppose the Balsillie's move to purchase the team, as will the City of Glendale. It is believed the city will argue filing for bankruptcy does not give the team the right to break their lease, and that commissioner Gary Bettman was dealing with the situation in Phoenix when he was informed of the bankruptcy proceedings and the bid to sell the team to Balsillie.
Sources also say Moyes and Balsillie apparently collaborated on this strategy because Moyes believes Balsillie can, and will, pay more money than any other potential buyer or investor who would be interested in keeping the team in Phoenix.
The franchise had been actively seeking investors and new ownership since December when Burnside reported that the team under Moyes was in line to lose $30 million this season on top of the $60 million lost over the previous two seasons.
In April, it was revealed that the NHL had loaned the Coyotes an unknown sum of money in order to cover past due expenses including the team's payroll and rent at Jobing.com arena in Glendale, Arizona.
In a report in the Arizona Republic, Glendale city manager Ed Beasley stated that the league was running the troubled franchise -- a claim refuted by team president Doug Moss.
"The NHL is in charge of the team right now," Beasley said, according to the April 28 report. "We have assurances from the NHL the money will be paid. ... We are sitting down with the NHL and working confidentially with them, and the city expects to be paid in full."
Moss, however, claimed that no such arrangement was made.
"We are not reporting to the league," Moss said, according to the report. "We report to [owner] Jerry Moyes. I'm dealing with things in my area, the business side, and Donnie [GM Don Maloney] is dealing with the hockey side. ... It's business as usual."
Balsillie, best known as the co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research in motion, tried previously to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006 and Nashville Predators in 2007.

Ducks WIIIIINNN!!!!!!!

And about the Coyotes situation, they need to move back to Winnipeg. It is going to suck for Coyotes faithful, but when they don't make the play-offs or perform at a high level, you really can't blame the poor attendance to make up for the lack of revenue.

2. @Greenhouse:The Bruins just ran into a determined and very good Canes team, just like the Sharks and Ducks.

Red Wings & Ducks tied at 2-2. I expect this to go to Game 7 with either team winning.

Penguins & Capitals tied at 2-2. Nice comeback by the Penguins, but I'm still expecting the Capitals to win the series.

Canucks & Blackhawks are tied 2-2. Blackhawks got really lucky in Game 4. Canucks should take this series without a doubt as long as something like Game 4 doesn't repeat.

Hurricanes are over the Bruins 3-1. This surprises me. I thought the Bruins would take the 'Canes down easy. Guess not. Bruins could pull a comeback, but I doubt it.

Jim Balsillie is not alone in his desire to move an NHL franchise to Hamilton, Ontario.
The Hamilton Spectator reported Saturday that a second group, based out of Vancouver, is expected to talk to Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger about a lease on Hamilton's Copps Coliseum with the intention of buying the Atlanta Thrashers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=atl) and moving them north of the border.
Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell issued a stiff denial to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.
"I have spoken to our owners again today on this subject," said Waddell. "The Atlanta Thrashers hockey club is a vital part of the Atlanta area. We also own the Atlanta Hawks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=atl) and have controlling interest in a 99 year lease with Philips Arena. Our franchise is not available to be moved, we will continue to be part of this community for many many years."
While Balsillie battles in an Arizona court for the right to purchase and relocate the moribund Phoenix Coyotes (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=pho) to southern Ontario, the group, reportedly headed by developer Tom Gaglardi, will meet with Eisenberger Monday to discuss potentially moving the Thrashers in time for the 2010 season, the Spectator reported.
Eisenberger told the Spectator that he expects to have a clearer idea of the city's NHL future by Tuesday -- one day before Balsillie's May 13 deadline to finalize a lease for the Coliseum.
"By next Tuesday we will have a clearer picture of where we are," Eisenberger said, according to the Spectator. "We're in the middle of discussions with Mr. Balsillie and his group and I will be meeting with the second group. We need to understand their intentions. It's fair to say I will be talking to that second group."
The Thrashers are owned by the Atlanta Spirit Group -- an eight-man group that has been sparring internally in court for several years. The dispute stems from a 2004 dispute revolving around the group's other professional sports franchise, the Hawks, in which the group attempted to oust part-owner Steve Belkin.
As recently as February, the group appeared before a Maryland court in a final attempt to settle the details for the purchase of 30 percent stake in the two teams. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that Belkin was requesting $142.8 million for his portion of the two franchises.
According to the Journal Constitution, court documents show that the ownership group has lost $50 million the last two years and more than $174 million since the 2002-03 season.
Gaglardi tried and failed to purchase his hometown Canucks five years ago.

I'll just reflect on what a season it's been for the Ducks! Under 500 at the Trade Deadline and most fans and experts alike figured the Ducks couldn't make the playoffs. Surely enough, the Ducks did and made a lot of noise. We took down the Sharks (best record in NHL and very balanced team), and took the defending champions to 7 games, which was a 1 VERY lucky goal. I look forward to next season, the 2nd line needs an offensive boost and our defense is going to be weaker without one our 2 best defensemen (Pronger or Niedermayer).

Ouch..too good to be true. Well, if it still ends up being true..(their is a chance), the Ducks did NOT get a steal out of this. Jack Johnson is still a prospect by his game day offense and defense, but his upside is very high. What the problem with JJ is that he is going to demand around 4-5 million dollar year contract, and he is definitely not worth that. He is also supposedly a locker room cancer with poor chemistry with teammates.

Mr. Green
07-01-2009, 12:49 PM
Well, now that the draft is over, it's time for free agent signings and trades a-plenty!

Among the notables thus far:

Rangers trade Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto to the Canadiens for Chris Higgins, Ryan McDonagh, and Pavel Valentenko
Flames sign Jay Bouwmeester to a 5 year deal
Blackhawks sign Marian Hossa to a 12 year deal
Ducks trade Chris Pronger to Flyers for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, and two first round picks
Canucks re-sign Daniel and Henrik Sedin to separate 5 year deals.

Mr. Green
07-01-2009, 07:13 PM
And a few more notable signings:

Rangers sign Gaborik to 5 year deal
Canadiens sign Cammalleri to 5 year deal
Canadiens sign Gionta to 5 year deal
Leafs sign Komisarek to 5 year deal
Oilers sign Khabibulin to 4 year deal

Also, a possible trade:

The Senators have agreed to trade Heatley to the Oilers for Cogliano, Penner, and Smid. Heatley has to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal official.

Blackhawks Update:

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and his cousin were arrested early Sunday morning for assaulting and robbing a cab driver in Buffalo, according to several news sources in that city. According to a police report, the 20-year-old Kane and his cousin James M. Kane, 21, were arrested around 5am et after allegedly punching the cabbie after he said he did not have proper change for their trip fare.
The report says the cab fare was $13.80 and the Kanes handed the driver $15. He claims he had only $1 change and was not in possession of another twenty cents to give back. According to the police report, both Kanes took their money back and punched the cabbie in the face and head.
Both men have been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services.
The NHL is working with the local police department in trying to assemble the details, while NHLPA Executive Director Paul Kelly and NHLPA Director of Player Affairs Glenn Healy are also gathering information on the case.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=287230

Leafs Update:

The Toronto Maple Leafs are close to trading goaltending prospect Justin Pogge to the Anaheim Ducks, according to a TSN report Sunday.

The deal, which will see the Leafs receive a conditional late-round draft pick that can improve based on Pogge's play, is expected to be completed Monday. According to TSN, the Leafs are also expected to sign free-agent goalie Joey MacDonald.

The 23-year-old Pogge, a third-round pick in the 2004 Entry Draft, made his NHL debut with the Leafs this past season, posting a 1-4-1 record in seven games. He was 26-21-5 with a 2.70 goals-against average and .895 save percentage for the Toronto Marlies, the Leafs' AHL affiliate, and the previous season posted a 26-10-4 record, 2.34 GAA and .908 save percentage for the Marlies.

Pogge's chances of ascending the depth chart in Toronto seemingly ended with the signing of Swedish sensation Jonas Gustavsson during the offseason. Gustavsson is expected to challenge incumbent starter Vesa Toskala for playing time, which would have relegated Pogge to another season playing with the Marlies.

Pogge will join an Anaheim team that already includes Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who won a Stanley Cup in 2007, and Jonas Hiller, who comes off a breakthrough season in which he wrested the starting job from Giguere and led the Ducks to a seventh game against Detroit in the Western Conference Semifinals.

OTTAWA -- A van carrying equipment for the Minnesota Wild (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=min) caught fire on Friday afternoon and left the team scrambling ahead of its Saturday game against the Ottawa Senators (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=ott).
The fire occurred in the parking lot of Scotiabank Place, where the van had been driven following the team's afternoon practice at a neighboring facility.
"It was a five-minute drive," head equipment trainer Tony DaCosta said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Firefighters took care of the flames, which were located in the back of the van. Police said there were no injuries, and the team was still evaluating the extent of the damage.
According to The Canadian Press, however, it was already determined that all of goaltender Nicklas Backstrom (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/players/profile?playerId=3666)'s equipment was destroyed.
According to the Star Tribune, assistant equipment manager Brent Proulx is scrambling back to Minneapolis, where another he and fellow assistant manager Matt Benz, along with strength and conditioning coach Chris Pietrzak-Wegner, will round up replacement equipment and take it to Ottawa on an early Saturday morning flight.

The first blockbuster deal of the NHL's offseason went through Thursday when the Montreal Canadiens traded goalie Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues.

In return, the Canadiens receive two youngsters: center Lars Eller and winger Ian Schultz.

"Jaroslav's play in this year's regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs was remarkable," Blues president John Davidson said in a statement. "He has had very impressive numbers in the NHL and we are thrilled that he will be wearing the Bluenote for us."

Halak will be a restricted free agent July 1 and has not signed a deal yet with the Blues, his agent, Allan Walsh, told ESPN.com.

"And I can add that Montreal never contacted us since the season ended," Walsh said.

Halak was one of the big stars of the Stanley Cup playoffs, helping underdog Montreal to huge upsets of Washington and Pittsburgh.

The New Jersey Devils have re-acquired forward Jason Arnott.

The Devils announced Saturday they shipped right-winger Matt Halischuk and a 2011 second-round draft pick to the Nashville Predators for the 35-year-old Arnott.

Arnott had 19 goals and 27 assists in 63 games last season. He scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Devils against the Dallas Stars in 2000

The Philadelphia Flyers have added a veteran defenceman to a roster that came within two wins of the Stanley Cup, acquiring Dan Hamhuis from the Nashville Predators in a trade Saturday.

Philadelphia also received a conditional draft pick in 2011 in the deal, which sent defenceman Ryan Parent to Nashville.

Hamhuis, 27, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

"Obviously, our intention is to get him signed prior to that date and that is what our aim is at this point in time," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a release. "The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better."

Hamhuis averaged 22 minutes 24 seconds of ice time last season, his sixth in the NHL. He has never played in fewer than 78 games in a season with the Predators.

"Hamhuis is a good all-around defenceman," Holmgren said. "He has been in Nashville since his draft year.

"He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties."

Nashville selected Parent, 23, in the first round of the 2005 Entry Draft, but shipped him to Philadelphia two years later in the deal that delivered forward Peter Forsberg to the Predators.

Left winger Drew Stafford, who failed to produce points consistantly, expects to be traded.

Illegitimate top centers Tim Connolly and Derek Roy are rumored to be on the block in an attempt to land Florida's Nathan Horton.

More power to Mr. Green. The Bruins will have to deal with a more powerful Sabres team in the Northeast Division. Thrashers Update

ATLANTA -- Craig Ramsay had to wait a decade for his next chance to be an NHL head coach. His old friend and former roommate, Rick Dudley, provided that opportunity.

Ramsay, who spent the last three years as an assistant with the Boston Bruins, was named the Atlanta Thrashers coach on Thursday. He joins Dudley, recently promoted to general manager, as the new leaders of a franchise that is starved for success.

Ramsay, 59, said he wasn't sure he would have another chance to direct a team after a successful but short stint as an interim head coach for Philadelphia in 2000.

"It goes through your mind," Ramsay said. "I've been in this business an awfully long time as a player and a coach. ... You start to look at it and think maybe that opportunity won't present itself again.

"When this came up and Rick and I got to talk, I relished the opportunity."

Ramsay replaces John Anderson, who was fired after the Thrashers (35-34-13) missed the playoffs.

Dudley said hiring Ramsay was an easy choice. The two played together with the Buffalo Sabres and AHL Cincinnati. When Dudley was Tampa Bay's general manager, he hired Ramsay as an assistant coach on a team that won the 2004 Stanley Cup.

Bruins Update

The Boston Bruins have given goalie Tim Thomas' agent, Bill Zito, permission to directly call other NHL clubs as they explore trading the former Vezina Trophy winner.

"I do have permission to talk to teams," Zito told ESPN.com on Thursday afternoon. "But I'm not pounding the pavement looking for a team."

A season after winning hockey's top goalie prize, the 36-year-old Thomas lost his starting job to Tuukka Rask late in the season and in the playoffs. Thomas, who must approve any deal, has three years and $15 million left on his contract.

Sergei Gonchar couldn’t get a deal done to stay in Pittsburgh, and shortly after the market opened Thursday he reportedly got an offer he couldn’t refuse from the Ottawa Senators.

According to various media reports, including TSN, ESPN.com and the Ottawa Sun, Gonchar has signed a three-year contract with the Senators that will pay him $5.5 million annually and includes a no-trade clause.

"Sergei had Ottawa one of his top teams to hopefully speak with," said agent J.P. Barry. "They showed how much they wanted Sergei to help run the power play in Ottawa and he hoped that they were a team that would step up. He can help them. He’s very excited."

Gonchar was a Penguin since 2005 after signing a five-year deal to play coming out of the work stoppage. He did not disappoint. For most of his five seasons he was Pittsburgh’s best defenseman and power play quarterback. He contributed 54 goals and 205 assists (259 points) in 322 games in Pittsburgh.

Injuries limited Gonchar to only 87 games over the past two regular seasons, including just 25 in 2008-09, but he played in all but two playoff games and helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 2009 with 14 points in 22 games. He had 12 points in 13 playoff games this past spring.

Gonchar is nine games away from 1,000 for his career. He played 10-plus seasons with Washington before being traded to Boston in 2004, but he played in only 15 games with the Bruins before the work stoppage. He has 202 goals and 482 assists (694 points) for his career.

Red Wings update

The OPP have confirmed that former NHL enforcer Bob Probert has died of an aparent heart attack after being rushed to hospital with vital signs absent after collapsing on a boat on Lake St. Clair in Windsor, Ontario on Monday.

Probert was 45 years old.

Probert's father in law, Dan Parkinson, said at a news conference Monday that Probert had complained about "severe chest pain" around 2 p.m. before collapsing.

"This is a tragedy for the family and totally unexpected," Parkinson said.

Oilers update

The Edmonton Oilers took the next step in Taylor Hall's career Monday, signing the top selection in the 2010 Entry Draft to an entry level contract that may well lead him to a spot in the NHL as soon as this fall.

"I have the tenacity, I have the speed, I have the skill to do it," Hall told NHL.com when asked why he should be picked first. "If Edmonton feels I'm their guy, I'm going to try make that organization as best I can, try to help them from the shape they're in. If I'm not, I'm not going to be too depressed. It would be a great accomplishment to go No. 1. I think I've worked pretty hard for it.

"I think just having these young guys step in right from junior, I think it just shows the development in major junior hockey is pretty good, so hopefully I can step right in there and make an impact," Hall said prior to the Draft.

Hall is seen as one of the cornerstones in the Oilers' rebuilding efforts and scouts across the hockey universe say they would not be surprised to see Hall don an Oilers jersey for the 2010-11 NHL season.

"I like to think I'm a fast offensive player," Hall said. "I like to think I work hard and create a lot of offense for my team. If I had to say who I play like in the NHL, maybe Zach Parise, that skating style, a very good offensive player."

Hall was ranked No. 2 by NHL Central Scouting behind Tyler Seguin heading into the 2010 Draft, but the consensus was the Oilers would opt for the dynamic, talented Hall and Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini didn't disappoint, naming Hall the top selection in the Draft.

Lightning update

ightning general manager Steve Yzerman remains a busy man as Tampa Bay have signed unrestricted free agent defenceman Brett Clark to a two-year contract.

The Tampa Tribune is reporting the deal is worth $3 million per season.

The 33-year old Clark had three goals and 17 assists in 64 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season. He also appeared in one of the Avs' playoff games.

"In Brett Clark, we are adding an experienced, intelligent defenseman who plays the game efficiently," Yzerman said in a statement. "He'll not only help steady and stabilize our defense, we expect him to help mentor our younger defensemen as they grow and develop. We are pleased he elected to join the Lightning today."

Over 517 games, split between Colorado, Montreal and Atlanta, Clark has 34 goals and 105 assists and is a minus-27.

Devils update

According to a report, it appears that Ilya Kovalchuk is on the verge of re-signing with the New Jersey Devils.

The New York Post is reporting that the unrestricted free agent, who played the final 27 games of last season with the Devils, is going to sign a seven-year, $60 million contract with the team as soon as Monday.

The Los Angeles Kings dropped out of the running for Kovalchuk on Sunday, while the New York Islanders indicated some interest in the Russian sniper but reportedly never made a formal offer.

You can always look to the Islanders signing DiPietro to his megamillion multiyear deal. It kind of sucks to be stuck with a lifetime contract when you hardly appear for any games each season staying on injured reserve.

As for Kovalchuk, I think he has decided to stay in New Jersey, where he has the better chances of winning a Stanley Cup. The deal, however, will need to be revised to meet NHL's specifications.

Niederreiter, Nino: http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftprospectdetail.htm?dpid=2393

Tavares will develop into a good player, but his abilities will be handcuffed by the consistent underperfomances of the Islanders. Battling in a very tough Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference with the Penguins and Devils as perennial division champions, and the Flyers and Rangers battling for third and fourth places, will continue to leave the Islanders in the basement for years to come.

Good job, Vanek. For someone who should be putting up numbers similar to Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin, he has underlying issues. Many Sabres fans have been calling for his benching/healthy scratch. If he can score goals and be a point-per-game player, he can do some great things for the Sabres, such as winning the Stanley Cup.
