Finally caught up with this episode. This was probably the least goofy, and most well-executed "serious" plot in the season so far. Aside from the acting and dialogue (which is an ongoing problem for Samurai), there really wasn't anything in this episode that stood out as particularly horrible to me. Nevertheless, I didn't have as much fun watching this as I did while watching "Deal With a Nighlock."
The episode started off nice with the Rangers getting some time off, and deciding to go to the amusement park because Emily's never been there before where she "came from." It's nice to see character bits alluded to like this. And again, it was really nice to see the Rangers having fun with each other and acting like friends. That's something that's really been missing for the last several seasons. Even with the bad acting, the Rangers came off as likable, and their energy was appealing.
Jayden was fleshed out in this episode. I hated him in the premiere for seeming too perfect, but I really liked the characterization they went for here. He's a selfless hero who takes on the weight of the world, and keeps pushing himself well past his own limits. This is the kind of Ranger I've wanted to see on the show for years. And while it was nice, I couldn't completely get into it because of the lousy dialogue and acting. There is NO subtlety when the episode's messages are conveyed.
Bulk and Spike show up once again, with absolutely no interaction with the rest of the cast. They mention training to be samurai again, even though the audience still hasn't been told why they want to do that. It's just so weird how their characters haven't been integrated into this show in even the slightest of ways. Spike's acting was also over the top and cartoonish once again.
The Beetle Disk was pretty good by the standards of new toys on this show. It was well-explained, introduced early in the episode, and was something that Jayden actually had to work for. And the scene when he was practically killing himself while training at night was good. Best "drama" so far in this season, though Ji's lines didn't help it.
The action was good, both on the ground and after they called in the Zords. Don't think I've ever seen foot soldiers grown to Zord size so casually before.
But in the end, this episode didn't have much in the way of story. Just Jayden killing himself while training alone, and then flip-flopping into a more balanced guy all of a sudden at the end. "Day Off" was better written than "Deal With a Nighlock, "which was an episode that had an indefensibly silly plot. But "Day Off" didn't have the character interaction of that episode, nor did it did it have its goofy charm.
I gave "Deal With a Nighlock" a 7/10 rating, very generously on account of the humor and bonding between Mia and Kevin. I'll give "Day Off" a 6.5/10.
This episode was just meh. It was too generic to really hate or like. It's probably in between The Team Unites and Deal with a Nighlock. I'm still convinced Emily's personality is dumb blonde. Kevin's acting is really really starting to bug me. The jokes feel tacked on like the first two seasons of Digimon but the jokes on Digimon were at least amusing. Maybe they need to hire those writers. At least the music was really good.
I'm giving it a C.
This was the best episode of the three that have aired here so far. It was much better written with a familiar plotline, the Rangers coming against an unstoppable monster and having to get a new weapon to defeat it. The redneck monster itself was pretty amusing and and we got to learn a little more about the characters, particularly Jayden. The message about Jayden finding the right balance in life was a good one. 8/10.

I also wanted to add that Spike SUCKS! Worst laugh ever!
I can love this ep more now that I know that Mike WILL eventually teach Emily how to shred.
