Production scenarios aside, wouldn't it have made more sense for Jason and another ranger go into the Dark Dimension?
I just finished watching The Green Candle on Netflix, and it got me wondering about this.
Zordon COULD've done the following with the rangers:
A.) Send Jason and Kimberly into the Dark Dimension to battle Goldar and retrieve the candle.
B.) Have Billy and Trini open and close the dimensional gate. Both of them being more intelligent and technologically sound compared to the others.
C.) Have Zack and Tommy take on the Cyclops. Zack being the SIC, could've controlled the Dino Megazord to help battle/destroy the Cyclops.
Or they could've just scrapped the episode altogether, have Tommy go on a martial arts tournament for a couple of episodes and than still have 20 more episodes ordered.
Tommy would still be a part of the team after the tournament, some of the episodes would need to be re-written to include him, the Return of an old Friend episodes would be scrapped and the Sentai footage for the Green Candle and the ROAOF could be used in different episodes as well.
Than have Zedd bring up the Green Crystal in S2 and the things would play out just the same from that point on.
But your idea is good too, however, they would need to come up with more original Green Ranger footage and story as well.

That's actually a pretty good idea on your part! If that would've been the original story, at least we wouldn't have had so much whining from Tommy about losing his powers...

Yep. Notice that his hair is longer (in a ponytail for the first time) when he returns? It was in the same style in the Cybertron pilot. But MMPR and Tommy were so popular, that the extra episodes were ordered, and Cybertron (which needed to be renamed anyway because Hasbro would've sued them as it's the name of the Transformers homeworld) was retooled as VR Troopers with Brad Hawkins in the lead role.
Yes, I've heard about that too. But also, wasn't Brand going to play the White Ranger in S2 originally? But instead, they brought Tommy back instead (which is a good thing)?
^ correct! You win a cookie!
I think Crayfish said this was debunked, I'm not possitive though you have to ask him.
I only wish the original three would have stayed until the end of S02. Oh well. Someday, I'm going to re-watch all of MMPR and re-write the series to include the original three just for myself... Maybe I will keep the Green Ranger in my version, I think...
Keep in mind, though it is widely accepted and even somewhat strict that Power Rangers and Super Sentai has its own continuity, you still have to keep the Sentai footage in mind when adapting.
Unfortunately, there was no such shot in the Sentai of Mammoth Ranger alone in the Mega Zord cockpit. When I was a kid, I thought why shouldn't Kim enter the Dark Dimension to help Jason while Zack, Trini & Billy go help Tommy and defeat the Cyclops with DBM. Of course, this was before I knew of the Sentai and its rules of adapting
Good point, would've been doable in season 2 and 3, which had US Megazord cockpits, but not season 1. They didn't have a copy of the Daizyujin cockpit - the one Bulk and Skull used in their dream sequence was woefully inaccurate (justified by the way, as they wouldn't have known what the real one looked like).
