I'd then speculate that he has an invisible membrane around his exposed flesh so his body doesn't deteriorate as well as cause him extreme agony at every moment of his time. For all we know, the metal suit could be some sort of containment suit that allows him at least a small bit of comfort.

If you're referring to those tubes, I think they're like an artificial mouth and esophagus. I mean, look at him. He can't put food in his face, there's a huge metal grate in the way. I think the tubes are used to get food and stuff into his body. I might be crazy, but I think there's an episode where he takes a potion or something through them. I'm probably wrong, but for some reason I keep thinking of the tubes glowing green. Meh.
