I dopnt have the source but he was confirmed to be back as Happy. As for why he left, I guess he had an option between Ironman 3 or some Disney related project. He chose the Disney project.

yeah, Iron Man 3! I love the poster above! Iron man is one of my favorites! love it.
I remember seeing that at Licensing Expo.

Wow, that picture is pretty awesome. I didn't watch Iron Man (or Captain America or Thor) until after I saw (and loved) The Avengers. Robert Downey Jr. is great in the role and I can't wait to see more. I noticed in Avengers that Tony Stark would make faces/touch his temples or his head as if he had a headache. I wonder if they'll bring in the tumor plot line Tony had in the comics into this movie or into Avengers 2.
Or, I could just be reading too much into stuff.

I think it supposed to feature A.I.M. and the mandarin if I heard right from moviepilot and they said that this armor that tony is wearing in this photo could be the extreims armor..an armor that is bonded to him and appears at tonys will..
I expect there going with the extremis iron man concept. Integrating nano tech into Stark's body to take on the next threat.
