My answer to the question is: No, they all fit in well. I enjoy each one of them.
According to Naruhisa Arakawa, Don's backstory was supposed to involve him witnessing his father's death, but that was cut because Arakawa wanted Don to be "an ordinary guy." When they get the Greatest Treasure, Don mentions that he could use it to restore his home planet - so he must have lost someone after all.
