Thread: Who would be a good director/writer for PR?

  1. #21
Oh, yeah, I agree with basically all of that. But most of that boils down to "they screwed up character continuity." Now, don't get me wrong, that's a huge, massive, difficult-to-overstate-the-importance-of flaw. But everything else the show does is so fantastic, from the aesthetic, to the dialogue, to the voice acting (why does Ocean Group suck so much when Canada has this caliber of VA?), to the plot, to being perhaps the best done author tract (which I have no inherent disdain for) in kidvid. I genuinely believe that, if it were somehow not attached to the pre-existing characters of Beast Wars, it would be the best recieved TV series TF has done. The Optimus Primal, Megatron, and Rattrap of BM are great characters. They're just not the characters we knew in Beast Wars. And that should be a flaw so fatal that the Unicron Trilogy should be looked at with more fondness, but the rest of the show holds up well enough for the show to be merely "highly divisive" instead of outright loathed.

In all honesty, Im not sure who would be a good directer, everyone has their own takes on series that PR reboot/film adaptation, would be almost diffrent then what show is.

re BM, what WAS the point of that "amnesia" plot in Beast Machines? It doesn't do anything except slow down the first quarter, then vanishes.

As for people who'd do good:

Transformers Rescue Bots is meant to be good kidvid, so let's throw in Nicole Dubic. Avengers is another fun one, so in goes Chris Yost.

Gareth Roberts and Phil Ford at gunpoint, for The Sarah Jane Adventures (but Roberts would probably not do it - Ford would).

For regular writer, Simon Furman because his Transformers work shows he can do a lot of good kid stories under strict guidelines and blows things up good (and he did SPD strips too).

Kirsty Marx, of Jem and freelancing-everything-by-Mainframe fame.

Amnesia plot bought them time to deal with "we don't know how to write any of these people, and audiences will twig that they're being written wrong." You can disguise the lack of any character growth or storytelling by making it a MYSTERY!

Dubic works on both Rescue Bots AND Prime. She's totally in for any pitch I'd make.

Smith doesn't like Transformers, GI Joe, or any kidvid produced after that point. He has issues with "warfare without stakes." He's also a creator well past his sell-by date. Not to mention he refuses to work under ANY kind of creative influence. He'd never sign off on working under Saban, Disney, Bandai, etc.

I hate lazy thinking. You nominated a man who HATES THIS GENRE OF STORYTELLING. Thus, your nomination was ill-thought. I merely observed the problems with this: he won't do an affectionate parody. He'd hatefully mock it. Have you ever seen Clerks II? Smith has said Randal spoke his own opinions on all toy-based children's media. He hates Transformers, PR, etc.
